292 to 242 EQ Changeout on 611G modules
« on: February 09, 2017, 04:53:59 PM »
I recently purchased 32 242 Eq cards from Gabriel at Pro Audio Upgrades and I am doing the modification on my 611G modules. I connect the wires from the flat on the HF and LF frequency pots to the 611G motherboard. I get the proper ohms from the HF and LF frequency to the proper pins on the on the EQ edge connector that the 242 is expecting to see. The EQ functions properly and sounds like the 242. My only issue is that when I press the switch from the for Bell or Shelf (which were the -3 and x3 switches) I get a popping sound when they are engaged and disengaged. I know it isn't a switch problem as I have test my switches before making the modification.

Would you know why this is happening? I know the 242 cards are fine as I have a single 611Ge module here and when I put the card in that module I don't get the popping sound. I also have looked extensively at the 611Ge module and the layout of the board looks exactly like my current module especially after adding the wires for the pots.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I am in the process of converting 32 of my modules.

You also need a different pot. Someone in the forum will say. Can you borrow a 242 channel that's already moded?

I have a 242 GE channel. I cannot borrow a modded G channel to 292.  I found out all the pots are the same.  The HF Frequency pot on the G is wired to be 1/2 of 47K ohms so you need to one cut one wire that drops the pot to 22.5KV. The swap really isn't super difficult.

I still do get the pop in the circuit when the bell/shelf switch is pushed, but I think if these were completely fresh switches it wouldn't be noticeable.

Hey Perfect. I read that after I posted. I have one channel that George converted for me and I remember him telling me he had to change a pot out.

Also didn't the 242 conversion kit from SSL include a new pot or was it 242 to 292? I thought I had a spare in my parts box.

I think the a conversion from 242 to 292 would need a pot change.  The HF Frequency pot is the one in question. On the G (292) that pot have 4 rows of connectors and they have one set bridged so to the pot puts out 23.5k.  If you remove the bridge the pot puts out the 47K that is the same on the 242 modules. We have a 242 G module and we compared the resistance of the pot so we knew they were the same.

After the mod, we compared it to the 242 channel and they were the same.
