« on: July 31, 2012, 12:15:57 PM »
Just out of curiosity, does anyone know anything about the 4000B consoles?
Managed to find a few pics but not much info.

I was an inch from buying one in 1998, it was the one that was in Matrix Studios at that time, and originally from Town House. Price was 7k at that point.

The rotary routing at the bottom of the channel, with the destination LED display (very Knight Rider) but.... unlike the E/G/J/K matrix at the top, you could only send to one destination!!

Decided to go for an E from Matrix Wessex, for quite a bit more ££

That vinyl carvers one is the townhouse/matrix console. There's a bit of blurb on the vinyl carvers website about it but "The SSL room is currently not commercially available"

Are the 4000A and 4000B different? I might give PJ & Duncan a ring, see if they've got the service manual. Be a bit nosey!

Sintek - what's the routing stuff about? It was 32 track routing still but without individual switches then? I looked at the pictures and assumed the 2 lowest pots on the channel done L/R and front/back routing

I can't imagine having been there in 1977 (I was born 85 though...) and seeing a desk like this, must have been way ahead of it's time

yeah, it states in an earlier 'web save' the Vinyl Carvers guy's bought it in 1999, from Matrix.

I contacted SSL in '98 when the console was offered to me, they really tried to put me off!

But.. being really nice people, they dug the manual out of their archive, and Faxed me a copy!!!

Understood the routing at that point, from memory, it was at the bottom, seem to remember one continuous knob for destination with LED display, and other for pan.

Yes njm, no individual switches at all, it looked cool though.

Hello All,
This is my first time and first post on this forum.
Thanks Mattia for setting it ! :)

I remember having fixed the power supply of a 4000B one day, end the 90's.
The console was humming hard, the big audio caps were dead, empty.
It was at the personal studio of an artist near Toulouse, in the south of France.
He had bought the console in NYC a few months ago, with a Studer A800.
It is my only experience on a 4000B and I have no idea where it is now...

It happened to me.
The very first SSL I saw was at this annual french "Pro Audio Show", at the Sofitel Sèvres, in Paris, 1977 (or 78 ?)
And yes, it was a lot way ahead of its time :  a mixing console with a TV inside !   :) :) :)
Best,
Guy
