Bicc 19pin modern replacement connector?
« on: November 07, 2017, 12:39:22 PM »
Hi

I have tried to study many a datasheet for circular connectors to find a modern replacement for the circular bicc connectors used for ssl power supplies etc.

The closest I got was https://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Amphenol-Industrial/UPT06D-16-19P/?qs=aVyJF2WnouRnxaqokqRpKw%3D%3D but the placement of the pins are in a more hexagonal shape than in a round shape as the original BICC ones.

I have found working contacts: https://www.tme.eu/en/details/saf16b-02g03/other-industrial-connectors/amphenol/

Has anyone found a working alternative or supplier to the shell?
Maybe Jim can chime in?

Thanks in advance

Cheers,

Bicc 19 way SSL Power supply connector

Hi Uffe and everyone else.

Yes, this 19 way connector, as used for the 661 SSL power supply and external cables was originally a BICC version. It seems that the name has changed and I found this in the Farnell catalogue.

http://uk.farnell.com/souriau/utg01619p/receptacle-size16-19way-pin/dp/105348

When you click on this, you will see other associated parts as well.

SSL also used other sizes of BICC round and rectangular connectors and when I have time, I will detail more of the parts used.

Thanks xmax and Jim. Great info!

I am also wondering about a modern replacement for the rectangular 6 pin type bicc connectors on the upper bus card in each bucket. Is it the same new vendor? It uses the same type of contacts and other pinocounts of the same connector are used many places in the ssl system like in the computer.

Last time I replaced a six pin connector, I used this: http://www.newark.com/souriau/sms6p-1/plugsocket-connector-housing/dp/16F5781, so I would say that Souriau seems to be the new vendor.

Replacement SSL Bicc connectors

Hi Uffe (and others)
I wish I had more time to detail all of these connectors, as used on SSL consoles but, for now, I will provide some basics.

SSL used the round (4, 8, 12, 19 and 35 way) and rectangular (6, 12 and 24 way) connectors on their consoles which were originally made by Bicc and (some of?) these were called Trident.
It seems that they are now produced by another company and I have shown some basic details below after looking up the 6 way connector that Uffe requires. This one is for the 2 x twin screen cable that goes into the connector via socket (female) crimped inserts and plugs into the upper buscards on the SSL.

This reference is for Farnell and is more relevant to Uffe as she lives in Denmark in Europe. The USA has a similar company called Newark, I believe which is associated with Farnell.

http://uk.farnell.com/itt-cannon/tst06pa00/connector-housing-plug-6-way-free/dp/1188208

If you click on this link you can also see other associated parts (like the round connectors and crimps) further down the page.

Hope this helps for now. I can't quite believe that these 6 way connectors cost about 70p (or $1.00) now as they used to cost about £0.16p, not too long ago and they are only bits of plastic and the ruddy oil price as gone down over the years as well...!
