Routing Switch LED Failure
« on: September 20, 2019, 03:16:36 AM »
Hey guys,

So two years ago we completely took apart our console. Cleaned it, recapped it, had it working great. A huge problem we came across were the routing switch LED's being out. We replaced them all with routing switches with working LED's, had all of them working, and now two years later we're having routing switch LED's dying again.

Wondering if anyone knows why they die so frequently and if they're easy to replace. Noticed the solder points for the LED's are underneath the switches and from experience I'm trying to do anything to not have to remove the switches because they never come off easy.

PS: Saw the post about Jeff Steiger at CAPI making new switches, praying he starts making routing switches too.

Any input help!

Kind regards,

You can snip the LED leg from the bottom side right where it bends into the soldering point. Solder the new LED leg to that spot and you're good.

If you want to fully remove the old LED, bend the LED so that it stands up (no 90 deg like it is now), apply some fresh solder to the LED solder points. With a quality soldering iron with a wide tip you can touch both pins at once and pull the LED out. Use a desoldering tool to clear the holes. Insert new LED, solder on the bottom side and you're good.

Or if that isn't working for you, bend the LED up, snip the LED off, desolder the two pins. This should allow you to use tweezers to grab whats left of the LED leg and pull one out at a time.

As for new switch boards - they are easy to make but the only source for the motherboard pins were original new old stock and they wanted out of this world prices for them. If anyone knows who is making those pins for CAPI, I would be happy to design and upload 4k/6k and 8k switch boards for the forums. Send to your local shop and away you go.
