**SSL 8000 (4000/6000) Patch Bay Spacing Template **
« on: June 26, 2014, 05:59:28 AM »
After an eye openingly VICOUS 48 hours trying get/make/find an kind of definitive SSL patch bay strip template/solution,
I am stopping what I'm doing right now and just saying; definitively: THE DIMENSIONS OF THE TT SPACING FOR AN SSL CONSOLE IS:

10/16th in wide (stereo pair) x just under 5/16 of an in tall (maybe 4.8, 4.9 in tall?)
ergo, a single space wide = 6/16th in.

unless I'm completely insane, this clear cut information seems IMPOSSIBLE to find on the www, so there it is. have at it. I hope you can turn my misery into joy.

re: templates and applications, I think w/ this basic knowledge, you can apply it to anything: illustrator, CAD software, easy-draw. I use Omnigraffle Pro, but others use Word. SO, there you have it. undisputated raw numbers. (at least I hope :) )

cheers!

if you make a table 1 row high X number of patch connections and set it to be the length of the strip, then you don't even care what the number is.

some adjusting may be needed when there are breaks in the layout.

I usually use a pTouch labeler, how long would you like the strip to be? use the ones that have a USB port.

Cheers

I have a template in Excel but it's not really mine to post on here as it came from Pete Higgs who commissioned our desk. I'll see if I can find the row height and column spacing though so it's easy to do your own.

What I would say though is that a borderless A3 printer and an A3 guillotine make it far easier to print your patch strips out!! A3 printer can print an entire 48 socket strip on one sheet, so no more glueing bits of A4 paper together and fiddling with patch layouts that break in half in your software. I can reprint and fit a strip in about 30 seconds now :)

ok, non middle of the night update:

measuring the original SSL strips, I have each patch point 5/16th inch wide, or 10/16th of an inch wide for a stereo pair. (not 6 as I mistakenly typed above) and the height of the strip (which should fit perfectly into a clear designation strip, at ~ 4.88/16th of an inch. (just under 5/16th of an inch)
This of course is for a 80 point, 26" wide bay.

FYI, SSL still does sell the clear strips in groups of six. I *think* they're made for AWS/Duality/etc bays, but seems to basically fit my 8000 just fine.

In terms of an actually template that can be shared and used, I'm more than happy to upload mine, but it was made using a program called Omni Graffle Pro, which to be fair, doesn't seem all that common. Let me know if anyone's interested.
