Title: Bills of material for recapping SSL E/G 611 Channel and 651 Centre Section!
Post by: marcmozart on March 23, 2013, 03:07:23 PM
In addition to the "recapping the 611 channel" thread
http://forum.sslmixed.com/index.php?topic=306.0
I've gone through the different cards and looked at the schematics to get a BOM to order the required capacitors.

Please keep in mind, my console is a 1991 G-Series, earlier desks might have different cards, later G+ desks could also vary (only very slightly).

I recommend to use Panasonic FR Caps for values higher than 10uF, and Panasonic FC or WIMA MKS Film Caps for values 10uF and lower. The WIMA option is expensive though. More about those here: http://forum.sslmixed.com/index.php?topic=593.0

For the non-polar type caps, I recommend Nichicon Muse ES Series Caps - they are specifically designed for audio use and considered "High End"-caps in the Hi-Fi Community. FWIW, they look cool as well, and there are not many options for Non-Polar Caps anyway - mouser.com has very competitive prices for these and also the Panasonics and a good user interface being able to save carts, projects and BOMs.

EDIT: I have attached a PDF that contains a table which allows you to make your own BOM for both the 611 Channels AND all the cards in the 651 Centre Section. I will keep updating this file, but it's now fairly complete and includes part numbers for the recommended caps.

Hey guys,
I'm placing an order now for all the typical caps used on a E/G-Series. I can get cheaper prices if ordering more - please let me know if anybody wants to join.

Hello Marc

I do not know if late..these days I must order caps for 4040...you bought for yourself?
I bought new desoldering station..and I am ready for start recap...  ;)

Regards,
Raf

Nichicon 'MUSE" ES is what i have in every channel for non polars (and in the center section too).
they are considered the best for audio use, lots of audiophiles use them. the rest is all panasonic fc/fm.

Hey Guy's got a great deal on non-polar caps at Rapid Electronics.

They're discontinuing the range, and these are priced for clearance: 5p and 3.4p per cap :-))))

Going to give them a go changing from back to back polar caps (E series) to single non-polar configuration (G-series) on some Cue amps.

Posted an update of the BOM including centre section. (see first post of this thread)

Hi Marc,
thank you so much for your threads on re-capping the SSL G series, it is proving a big help for me.

We're in a process of re capping an SSL G series also.

Did you already re-caped your desk?

Do you have an estimate of how many days did it take to finish the job?

I would also like to ask you if you have a BOM with the quantity you needed for each cap?

regards
iL

Hi iL
the list with the quantities is in the attachment of the first post of this thread.

If you're really fast, you can maybe recap a channel in about 60 - 90 mins. I take longer as I also clean edge connectors and the cards in general.

I've recapped perhaps 30% of my console. It's an ongoing process. More on my refurbishing process in this thread:

Hi Marc, thank.

Yes, I've seen your bom, but was not understanding it. Sorry

Now I think I got it,
So the first part is for the channel

And the second part with cards, 82E22, 82E23, 82E24, 82E274, 82E25, 82E26, 82E27, 82E338, 82E29, 82E30, 82E31, 82E32, 82E33, 82E34, 82E148 is for the center section, is that right?

I've seen your thread about the work already done to your console and studio, amazing stuff. Congratulations.
I learn a lot in your threads.

Thanks

Yes, that is correct. The BOM is still incomplete as far as ICs etc., but the list of Caps should be 90% there. When you recap, always look at the values that your specific cards have, cap-values sometimes changed with a new revision of a card.

I am also trying to understand what "role" a specific cap has. E.g. the 10uF 35V are almost always on the power-rail. Other caps are serving as "coupling caps", making sure that no DC passes from one stage to the next.

Take this from someone who has no deeper understanding for electronics, but the more I read about these things, I slowly start understanding.  :)

The BOM for the Caps is updated to Version 1.1b - Part Numbers for most caps are added, so you can easily find them via google or search on your preferred Electronic Dealer's website. Mouser.com works very well for me so far.

Hey Luke,
these are non-polar caps - use Nichicon Muse ES Non-Polar. Check the height, you might need to use 16V rated, not sure as I haven't recapped this particular card yet.

that one will depend on which version of the card you are recapping, some have the "pull-up" resistor to the rail to polarize the cap and need the higher voltage rating, some do not and technically do not need the higher voltage rating.

Individual investigation is needed to tell. If my memory is correct the earlier ones had the biasing resistor and need 25V rating and the later ones did not. But it may be different, caveat emptor.

Hi marcmozart! I'm going to recap ma 4040 g+ (1991). I can't download the attachments, maybe because is too old. Could you tell me which and how many caps I have to buy fo recap 1 channel and the master section (please tell me also if I can mod the center section replacing opamps etc.)

Regards,
Franz.

Hi,

Original BOM attached.

Chris

Is there any way that I can get the BOM list from you?

BTW, does anyone know why every time I click on a post attachment it says, "404 - Attachment Not Found"?

unfortunately we recently had a hacker attack on the forum and we lost a lot of pictures and attachment.
Hence you get that message.

A couple of question regarding latest BOM for recapping 4k.

The NP 10/16v, couldn't a FILM cap be used instead?

On my 294 Group card  C10,11 C6,7  are NP 10/50v
Can't find them on the BOM, I guess those are usually FILM but on my 4056G+ SE they put NP there
and I have 6 NP 220/6.3 instead of the BOM's 7.
