Well, I've collected parts for awhile and finally got first bucket together. SSL Guru and God Sintech is modding my vu's. waiting on second bucket and buss cards from Kevin (audioparlour) so I can get it put together. This will be a true passion of love. This couldn't be possible without my buddy Sintech, who basically is helping me out and taking time to explain a lot of stuff that I have no idea about. I can't praise him enough. Nothing but love for my bro. Now to get Mr. Jim some money so I can get a kickass patch bay going. Thanks to everyone here, Mattia thank you also my friend.
I'll keep posting progress, all input is welcome to help a SSL brother out.
-
this is looking rather promising...
DETAILED pictures are a MUST!
I am sure you are going to have a lot of fun with this, but most of all make GOOD music with it!!!

Thanks Mattia , If it wasn't for you , andy, and Jim. This could never even happened.
Hopefully other SSL gear freaks will post and help as I go thru this process, which has become a blast.

Hey Myke, it's a total pleasure to convert the VU PCB cards for you, it's just 10 mins each, and done 24 already!! I've done nothing more than exactly what SSL did. :)
Took a while to work a 9K circuit to work with the 4K.. but hey! we got the meters cheap! so it was worth the science.
Also tried to do a pictorial mod guide for this... but it's way tooo hard to explain :( Only you, me and Stef got the meters from that 96 Channel 9000J, so happy to mod yours.. ones also Stef! too :-)
Here's a YouTube of the very first 100% working 9K to 4k VU conversion:

Looking at the pic, you need to move the Penthouse metering rails forward.
The bucket in the present form is in 'Bargraph mode' which sits deeper.
Normally, an adapter is put in for VU operation in the factory.
What I did was move the top and bottom rails forward and just use the back screws to hold the Isep Rails in place to make the VU panel flush.
-
I kept looking at your pic and thought something wasn't kosher with that. So I need to move the top piece forward to be flush? Seems simple enough.
Anything else you see I might had screwed up? Lol
I can email you better pics with meters out. Just set them there cause they look cool.hehe
Now, where the Hell does the PSU hook to, and where do I take mic, line, sends etc... Out the dsubs.
In other words, I've fallen Andy and can't get up.hehe
Your the best bro, I owe you more than you no, and I gotcha back at all times my friend.

Hi Mike
Sorry I haven't been in contact. I've been busy with a few jobs, various possible waste of time small studio wiring enquires plus I left you alone as I knew you had other things to deal with and could do with a break!
Good to see some pictures of your console at last and that you have some help from people on this forum.
For the record, and if my memory serves me correctly, SSL supplied VU or PPM meter consoles with the deeper rectangular normal isep rail and, Bargraph meter consoles, as sold, with a less deep penthouse isep rail. At some point, they may have supplied consoles with 2 Isep rails bolted together so that one could be detached to allow Bargraphs to be fitted, referring to Andy's (Sintechs) point.
I still have a rough layout here of some 48 way patchbay layouts involving ProTools etc that you may need so get back to me when you are ready for this. I can certainly help with planning and wiring your console looms to the studio via the patchbay. I have all the bits and this is easy for me (I have been designing patchbays involving minimum patchcords for decades). I just need to know how you work and will do so in the future so I can future proof it. Maybe give me a call or email.
Regards for now from Jim Lassen (email and phone number available on my website)
-
Hey Jim, glad you poked in. I did what andy suggested and moved rails forward and it worked pretty great. I got thru the spell I was in, thanks to andy and your support. I no you know what I'm talking about. But doing good and back at it full throttle. I'm definitely wanting your patchbays, I'll email cause I've added a few things I'm adding that I need your input on. Thanks Jim.

Meter PCB's modified, also found you eight spare Meter Ribbons (S23E) Jim may have more, but it'll do the first bucket :-)

Andy, if I haven't told you lately. You are the man my friend.
Thanks a million. I didn't even know that you got the pcbs yet.
My channels should be here any day hopefully. Still waiting on 2nd bucket from audioparlour.
Going to find dsubs this week to put on bucket.
Thanks dude. I owe you plenty, but you know I gotcha.
Myke.
-
Hey Myke, see the attached files regarding wiring the BICC connectors for Audio
-
Thanks Andy, this will help me out a ton. Since I don't have any bicc connectors can I solder straight to the lugs? Channels got here today, but I'm out of town working, which blows, cause I want to fire these up.lol I seen where your leaving groupdiy. I hate that, but this is your home now.hehe
Myke
-
Hey Myke, I soldered directly to the BICCS, then onto Female Dsubs, via 8 pair muliticore.
Yep, had enough of Group DIY!
-
Thanks andy for the info, that will help me out a ton.
Since I don't have any bicc connectors, and my channels will be here tomorrow, can I just solder to the lugs that will go to my dsubs. I have the dsubs finally that goes on back of bucket. Or should I try and find some bicc connectors? Where could I order them from, and what would be the part number?
Since I've never dealt with these kind of connectors..
Thanks bro for all your help and info dude.
Myke
-
Much faster to solder direct, I'd recommend cutting the jacket off 8 way multicore (or 16 or 24) to leave the foil screened leads. I'd then solder to the BICC's first, then zip-tie them back to eights, then finally solder the Female Dsub.
I don't have in-depth photos.. but a few when I did some standalone bucket mixers :) Would actually be so much easier to remove the upper bus card! and solder on the bench!!!
Take your time, don't rush to use the channels :-)
-
Soldering DSubs to upper buss cards, thanks to Sintech for such a great idea. Your the man.,

Update::: Finally after months searching for the infamous 026 cards, I found some here in the states. What's even better, dude is throwing in another bucket. Apparently this guy was the head man/chief tech at a major studio in Nashville that I interned at. Wait one second fellow SSL geeks, he is giving me the metal to cutdown to whatever size I decide to build my console, hold on there is more. He is also giving me all the trim and everything I need to make it really nice like my bro (Andy) console.
So it's time to get down and dirty and get my baby girl up and running.
Then it will be time for SSL wiring/patchbay god Jim to get me a patchbay going.
So I think Santa must have heard me call him a fat bitch cause this is the best luck I've had in years.
So Andy, get ready dude cause you no I'm going to asking alot questions.LOL...
Oh yea, Marc is sending me some of his odds and end stuff also.
Get R' Done...

Do you need some kind of computer to run a version of logic for the bucket? I have a 4056G and a spare bucket that I would like to power and use in a different room.
-
No, it doesn't need any computer for logic. Sintech made a little box that tricks it to think it see's logic or something like that. Hopefully he'll chime in. He comes up with some crazy stuff that blows my mind.
I see your from Nashville, be there in a few days. What part of Nashville are you at?
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
Hi, what metering does your spare bucket have?
Use a “Computer Bypass Lead” to eliminate the need of a computer.
You’ll need to set the faders to Independent unless you integrate 82E20 VCA card (not worth it for a single bucket)
Regarding Logic, you can hookup some momentary switches and a 82E21 Master Status card, this really simple to do. This will give full access to the usual Statuses Via the S3 ribbon connector.
Power wise, before the introduction of Stereo channels, buckets were breakered at 4A, now 6A.
So my reckoning a fully pumping 8 channels will be touching 3.5A
Personally, I’ve used an 6.8A silent (almost) supply same as Myke has, this is tried and tested solution.
If you want Program audio from the bucket, you can use a single 82E32 3 x Cue Mix card to give: LF RF and Cue 1
It’s all really dependant on your needs, thing is.. what you want to do is totally possible :-)
If you want to get your hands dirty.. I can supply:
Momentary switches in Black or G series Grey.
82E21 Master Status Card
82E32 3x Cue Mix Card
Power Supply Wired to a 6 way BICC
Jim is the man to talk to about audio interfacing, but I would imagine all your needs could go on a single bay.
Jim can supply an SSL Patchbay pre-wired to 6 way BICC’s ready to plug into your bucket.

Hi
I'm working on a 16 Channel Mini 4k, with no master section or computer, it looks like in Record Mode, but My customer would like to activate VCA To Mon, any ideas on how to do it in a simple way?
I think getting a 82E21 card is the best way, but the customer wants the simplest solution.
Thanks in advance
-
Hi getting a 21 card, and fitting three switches: Mix, Rec and VCA to Mon is very quick to do.
-
Of course, but could it be done without the card?
My customer also needs the cheapest way, and he doesn't need more than the VCA To MON switched on always
Thanks
-
You could work out a switching arrangement with protection diodes to feed the buckets
-
I'm glad Andy popped in, I wished I had 0.001% of his SSL knowledge.
SSL guru you are Mr. Sintech.

Myke.. just read it all off the schematics, and 14 years using the console.
Here's what I'm digging out for you, do you want Grey G or Black E switches? The pots are Centre Dented where needed also :-)))

Hey andy, black is cool with me. Are these for the master cue sends?
Myke
-
Hey andy, black is cool with me. Are these for the master cue sends?
Myke
The switches are the momentary ones for the 21 card status.
Pots are for the Master Cue mix amps, 10 with centre dents for the the Hi and low EQ, and 5 standard for volume. The stereo cue needs dual deck, but these all have 2-3 decks, so plenty spare. And they work with the correct knobs, so it'll all look compact.
All this is re-cycled from random SSL rubbish bought on ebay! :-)

Very cool. I'm tracking down some metal to start DIY'ing center section.
Loads of fun..

Greetings all, well i have had one hell of a 20hrs. I took a journey to Nashville to get the last 2 cards needed for center section(026 cards), plus ended up getting 2 buckets with the upper and lower busscards in them.Buckets were still put together. The funny part was trying to put these buckets still together, in the back of a 1996 Toyota Camry with 210k miles on it, no brakes and bald tires, which one of the tires i had to plug the day before i left. But i shoved them bitches in,ripped my car seats and my door panels. But thats not all. I drove round trip 700 miles in a snow storm. Got 1/2 mile from my house and ran in a ditch and got stuck. So, i adapted and carried these buckets all the way home. Now thats SSL dedication. LOL... Upload pics after i de-thaw. Anyways, Andy i got all the cards you told me to get and its time for me to begin.
The buckets with the cards look to good to cut down for center section, plus that gives as of now 3 buckets loaded with all buss cards except for 1 fader card. So, Mr. Andy aka SSL DIY KING-GURU-MASTER of all, i know you have a solution. So i dont want to mess with the buckets if possible, meaning i would hate to cut them down. Maybe get some Isep rails and do something like that? I"ll upload pics as soon as i can. But its on like Donkey Kong now,and im right on your shirt tail. I have enough buckets for 24 channels and then damn if you don't go to 32 channels. Please stop adding!!!!! Your killing me...HEHEHE... But im catching up. And Andy don't you bid on that G channel on ebay either...LOL
Myke
-
Hahaha!!! Everyone is forbidden on bidding on that G channel but you! be a shame if you don't get it. Too far away for me to even consider, and you deserve it! :-)))
Was that the same guy from b4?
Yeah, no point in messing up great buckets :--)))
Did you get some legs?
-
No legs bro, I looked in there tech shop. OMG!!!! About had a heart attack. Dude, they had channels everywhere, a 9072 just setting in there running, they were do some crazy stuff to it, andy you would have been in heaven. I wished you was there. They gave 8 more ribbons for the other meters. I was asking for everything.lol
I didn't want to leave. I ask the owner if I could just set me an air mattress in the corner.hehehe. Now where to start at on these center section cards? Legs? Making a center section? Damn, I don't no where to start, and I for sure as hell not going to sleep until then. Thank god I take adarall cause my mind would be in lala land..

Thanks Marc, I'll do the same , I have to send out a package to Mattia so when it arrives I'll send them both. My car still stuck in snow though.lol but all is good. Trying to figure out my next step.

Looks like an Ultimation fader bus card in that bucket. Looking like a console now Myke :-)
-
Yea, it's a ultamation card, hopefully it will still work. Looking at connector from 1st bucket, it seems it won't connect to the 2nd bucket fader card. Am I missing something or just get another fader card?
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
Not sure Myke, but you'll need to make that connection for VCA groups
-
Dammit man, I'll search for a regular fader buss card. Just can't trust no one these days. I'm on the hunt..lol
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
Yeah, just eBay that one 8)
-
Gotcha, Metalworks in Canada has some on eBay for around $100 that I think are what I'm needing. Anyone need an ultamation fader buss card let me no.
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
When you do your centre, it's well worth doing it a full bucket wide, just for the eight fader VCA groups. Lot of 24's have just four.. And that's not enough to do a band in the practical sense.
-
Gotcha, hunting a bucket right now.
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
I think I'll just use my 1st bucket with the channels in it, to make my center section. I'll leave the 2 buckets I just got as is. What do I need to be able to section it off and how wide will the section be? Like your Main section Andy.

Did you get some legs?
Andy, I won the channel by $0.01... You must have scared everyone else from bidding.lol
Will the G ch work in same bucket as my E's for right now?
Also a guy give me the 9k balancing pcb. That should be all cards for center section.
-
Hey, well done. Yeah the G will sit next to an E all day.
The 9K balancing board is always useful to have. Do you have a 25 card? if not the 9K can be used to balance up the output of the compressor, to give a stereo programme out.
-
Hey man, I have no 25 card. That's why I got the balancing pcbs. I think you told me you did that or I could do that instead of paying a crap load for the 25 card. I'll catch up to ya one day, if you ever stop adding. Before long your going to have the same size console you had before. So, you need to stop adding them and send them to me. Hahaha
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
My Mk1 centre section has the 9k card, it works great, basically the same cross-coupled output stage in a single IC package. It drives the monitor controller+Two retuning inputs in to a 192+ NTP LED PPM with no issues at a all :-)
You can compare it to the post VCA insert send, and it sounds the same.
The Mk2 has a 025 card, as one came about, unfortunately it's only one I have! :( and seem to have five of everything else!
-
Cool, I'll look around for a 25 card, but will use the 9k until I hit the lottery.lol
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
Ok fellow SSL freaks, there is another E channel on eBay, please stay away from it or ill send Sintech after you. Lol. Just kidding, if no one really needs it my friends, I DO..
Also I need a 25 card for center section, no rush just throwing that out there for everyone.
Myke.
-
Is that the E channel in Japan? In the pic it looks like a Pultec eq (orange) Great starting price, hope you get it dude.
-
Yea, it's the one in Japan. I notice the pultec style eq also. It won't stay at that price long. If it goes over $400, I'm out.
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
Yeah.. the Pultec eq is not so good. Same top and bottom as the Brown, but the mid range feels too wide to be useful.. It's crazy! You have to use one ..to really dislike it!
I got spare Brown cards, so don't worry :-)
-
I thought we could change the card out. I talked to Jim about patchbay. You might have to explain the center section layout that I will have, since I'm basically doing the same as yours, but with no talkback limiter cards. I was trying to figure out how to set-up it up with my Aviom cue system. Jim said he had done one with the cue system last year. On the edge connectors, do I pull the pins on the ones that say, not used and spares?

Can anyone tell me if this metal will work for my DIY center section? It would be to make the 651 top panel aka.. for the pots, switches?
http://m.ebay.com/itm/360693342322?nav=SEARCH&sbk=1
-
That's only 1.27mm thick, I would think it is too thin and would be difficult to work with without getting small kinks in it.
-
I found some thicker, I think they have 3/16th, 3/8 in. What would be a good thickness. Thanks walrus.
Myke
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
3/16th is about 4.7mm and maybe a bit too thick, making it hard to work with. 3/8th if *far* to thick! ;D
Best size is 1/8th if you can find it.
-
Thanks.
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
Ok, since I haven't found a 25 card yet, I got 9k balancing pcbs.
Andy, these look like they have jumpers on a few places and why was that done? I need to takes these out I'm a guessing. Do you no what the IC chips that go in here?
Also, I found some 1/8in 6061 T6 aluminum metal to start the 651 section. Will a 12"in X 24" piece of metal work to fab it up. Any suggestions would be great people.
Thanks all.
Myke
-
Yeah, they look like they may have been used for a different purpose. You want to remove the jumpers and stuff them as they were intended.
The IC package is expensive, but it has a complete cross coupled output stage in one IC :-)

The original in the picture is what you'd expect to find on a 4k, Sifam went to China, and discontinued their nice meters.

Well that blows. Haha, Jim had some other stuff posted, if you see anything else he has that will make my job easier let me. Thanks Andy

Nice work!! They are looking very good! You have to post photos when they are mounted on the wall! :D
I myself I'm building a new room and a few days ago finished building a giant backwall PRD diffuser. I've built them to work broadband and diffuse between 800Hz to 5kHz.
Check the photos here: http://instagram.com/p/lkXQryuzLI/
That's only 1/3 of it. There are 2 more similar diffusers that where fixed side by side to make a bigger one. Totally I used more or less 1500 cut pieces (ranging from 1mm to 22.4cm), 180 meters of wood. Each 1/3 weights about 80kgs.
I did it and cut it all by hand, it was an insane task! I share your pain! :)
Cheers,
Artur
-
I think my pieces are 2", 4", 6" , 8".. What was the lengths of yours?
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
I had pieces ranging from 1mm to 22.4cm (if I recall correctly), with 1mm steps. All steps were done in different quantities, depending on the map. There were pieces that repeated themselves like 3,2 times, others only appear 1 time. :)
I followed a map my acoustic engineer did for me: http://instagram.com/p/jXGFqyOzN2/
Here's a photo of all 3 diffusers side by side when I was testing them before building the backwall:
I've cutted all pieces with a disk saw, and then I glued everything together. In the end I've varnished by hand with a brush.
cheers,
Artur

Since I can't find a stand(or legs) for my console, I guess I'll have to get some square tubing and build my own. Can some give me the measurement of the height I need from bottom of bucket. Thanks all.
Recording 2 inches @ a Time(plus PT)
-
Hi Myke
I think the height from the SSL console DL panel to the floor is 18" but perhaps someone else can confirm this. As you muck with steel, I guess you could build your own console legs but how about just having two bits of steel across the width of the console (yours is 24 or 32 channels I think) and either having steel legs or, maybe wooden ones carved out of 4 x 2".
The SSL steel bars across the frame were 80x40mm and the aluminum cast and machined legs originally cost about GB£500 each. For the trim (penthouse and sides) I personally love a nice bit of wood but there are some pictures on this site of some funky looking consoles, some of which are in red I think. You could always stain wood in a suitable colour.
Do you still potentially need a wired patchbay from me? I guess you may be miles off that as Andy is helping with your centre section and you are still legless (the console, not you ... perhaps that is just a British humourist remark as I don't know how it translates!).
All the best anyway and hope this helps a bit. Regards from Jim.
-
Hey Jim, thanks for the help. I was also thinking of wood for the sides and such. It be cheaper in me and I can do a cool looking stain finish. Yes andy is helping me a ton on center section. Afraid I'll screw something up major since I've spent a ton on the cards. I definitely need a bay. I need some ISEP rails for the bay section I'm getting from andy. He said you had different lengths , plus some screws that attach buckets to each other.

Hey Myke, we had a discussion about that a few weeks ago. I had the same reaction as you when someone gave me a bad karma point. I believe Mattia wants to ditch the Karma-System, and I agree that it's not really needed. We all know this is a great community of people who help each other out a lot.

Karma points are useless honestly... just don't give it too much importance. People around here have good memory ;)
