Title: Modular SSL 4000 E/G build Project
Post by: sintech on July 11, 2012, 11:33:45 AM
Having owned two full sized SSL 4k's in the past, this time the aim is to have a small modular console for my project room, but with the sonic of the full beast. A lot of this I've pulled off Ebay and the like.

651 elements are all rack mounted, 026+027 cards: 2 buss summing/compressor: 032 cue mix amps

Currently I'm working on the G series bucket, that will add to the current action giving me 18 channels in total.. but it's on going project. ;)

(9x 1989 E channels, 9x late 90's G series)

Sintech,
Every time I go through this Thread I have to stop and scratch my eyes at least a couple of times....
:) this is a BRILLIANT way of putting together your DIY SSL ... I absolutely LOVE IT!

especially if I look at the way you customized it!
Are the mix amps the same as the originals? are they working well?

Mattia.

Post by: sintech on July 11, 2012, 05:09:01 PM
Thanks Mattia, a lot of passion has gone into the project in the 10 months since it's incarnation.

The Cue mix amps are 100% identical, apart from missing the one IC that does the EQ.
As the phase flips through the circuit, you have to reverse the phase of the cross-coupled balanced output (Due to lack of EQ), at the output XLR.

I couldn't get 032 cards at the right price, this was my only reason to DIY this

All other cards are original, apart from using Keith's SSL 9000 output board to balance the LF RF Master bus outputs.

What a cool idea! I'll bet there will be many who want similar small footprint similar desks for there summing / mixing pleasure.

Very cool!!!! where does the summing take place? Nice work. N
Title: Re: Modular SSL 4000 E/G build Project
Post by: sintech on July 15, 2012, 12:30:36 AM
Hi, the summing happens in the shown 027 cards, the Left and Right front busses sum to transistor pairs, just like the real console, wire for wire.

For me this is the total magic of the 4K 2Bus, and why an 80 channel mix sounds great! with minimal smear.

This summing bus output then is balanced and appears as normal on the patchbay as the 'Pre VCA send'

The 'Pre VCA return' is really the balanced input to the compressor section and master fader.

Looking great Sintech! We are about to recap our 82e27 cards and spotted a post by Nielsk suggesting there is an improvement to be had by replacing the back to back electrolytics with non-polarised caps. Tempting but I am torn between authenticity and the quest for perfection...
Title: Re: Modular SSL 4000 E/G build Project
Post by: sintech on July 18, 2012, 07:00:58 PM
Yes, and he also suggested 2200uF for C1 and C2, now it's 220uF on the E cards, but quickly checking G schematics, the larger cap is in place.

I think it gives a tighter bottom end.

Personally, it's all recapped with the stock E values, but would be interested if you went for the larger C1,2 option.

Post by: sintech on July 18, 2012, 07:58:04 PM
In fact it's 470uF on the E series inputs, compared to the G series on the right:

Same thing with the Back to backs, on the right they've been replaced after point 12 & 13, with single non polarised 100uF,

5K enlarged to 15k

VERY INTERESTING sintech, I think I am gonna do the mod, unless the G upgrade that was done to the console few years ago already includes this!

Worked on the 33 card (Listen Mic/Talkback & compressor) today, I hooked off Jim on my visit last week.

For use purely as mic pre's and limiter, for recording room mics,.. and as a naughty mixing parallel. (Ridge Farm Boiler style)

Decided it would be better to have a stereo limiter, rather than two preamps summing to mono. :-) building the second limiter/output stage on matrix board point to point:

Very nice idea turning this into stereo Andy, I was thinking of racking an 82e33 for our ICON room... The D-Control has a listen mic input but no limiter which is going to end in tears one day... The input capacitor choice gives a severe bass roll off if i'm not mistaken so I was thinking of a switched bigger one in parallel to give a more normal bass response when using it as a mic amp

Hi Paul,

thanks for the tip regarding the input cap, I think it's defo worth having two settings as your suggesting... cheers Doc :-)

This weekend has been metalwork for bucket number three, and the patchbay.

All Isep rails cut to size, with a hacksaw :-) Very happy with progress so far.

Thanks also to Jim, for a few helpful pointers

AWESOME...what are you going to use for the meters (if any).
also I am really curious to see what is going to be in the centre section....

Mattia.

BTW...is that a GEARSLUTZ cup I see on the table (in the pic with the washing machine)?

Hey Mattia, no standard metering, it's either too problematic, or too expensive.

Do have a nice master plasma (German) with inbuilt phase meter...but, it's too small to fit in the 4 space centre. So will probably sit in-between the monitors.

The top panel is just to sit the LARC on!!! :-)

Going to get Pete (sinestar) to CNC the final centre panel, it's really just VCA cuts and solos, Master status, and pretty much what's on my current temp panel:

hehehe, you know it's GS mug :--))

Frame Complete 4024 with Right Hand Patch., it's still very modular and every bucket terminates locally to Dsubs. Took about an hour to bolt it up.

As of today, it's sounding great, super low noise floor, on the LF, RF buses, and all 6 cue/aux mix amps are working perfectly. Looking forward to installing it in my studio in the weeks to come. :--)))))

If anyone has a 82e20 card (VCA Groupers and Cuts) for sale, let me know :-)

The last few weeks progress:

Going through new channels from Jim, via the SSL 4002 Demo Console, and standard 611 extender

Working on the VCA group matrix board

82E20 VCA Group card, bought from the fantastic people at Recycled Audio

Following the SSL service manual 'Point to Point' wiring
(http://i44.photobucket.com/albums/f23/sin-tech/sc.jpg)

Recapping the power caps on the 82E20 card

Competed back plane wiring, just VCA Trim pot and switch connections to go

661J (Japan) The Jap's weren't happy with the original 661, and came up with this beast. It has 2x 19 way BICC outlets, so pushed the boundary to 56 channels on a single supply.

Andy...this is brilliant!
I wonder, do you think there is a way to make the E series trim look like the G series? I'd love to make my 4064E sides a bit more aggressive like the G series.

Mattia.
Title: Re: Modular SSL 4000 E/G build Project
Post by: sintech on December 07, 2012, 12:29:24 AM
Hey Mattia, the metalwork is identical, so you could fit G trims on, it's just getting hold of them in the first place. I seem to remember G side trims being really lightweight, almost Styrofoam like?? The arm rest is sleeker, and top of the penthouse goes a little higher.

Personally, the E series Trim is iconic :-) heheheh, but that's my view :-)

Time to address the VCA groups for the console:

I scored an old E series 82e20 card from the wonderful people at Recycled Audio, Re-capped and re-chipped for good measure.

Quick backplane, adding an extra S17E connector, and a random eBay  6K panel with Solo Cuts.

I still need 4 more Solo/Cuts.. so it's DIY time once again:

Collected Junk (mainly from Jim's containers)

Finished Point to Point:

What caps did you use and where to order? Do you have a link? What kind of values do I need to recap a full channel strip?

Guys, please do not quote pictures, it makes thread very annoying to read... (silent wish you'll edit your posts, thx)

For me those caps Sintech has used look like Dubilier, I went with Panasonic FC series for audio and FM series for power. Mouser is good place to order them.

Hey Marc, the console is in use everyday, and really happy with how it sounds.

Currently, building the MK2 Centre Section using all the usual cards from the 651, but leaving out. the monitor section, talkback and maybe the oscillator. The backplane is all point to point.

It's quite compact, and has dual concentric pots in places.

When it's complete, it'll get fitted it over a few days, and change a few other aspects.  8)

Started working on the MK2 centre section this week, it's just nine essential cards:

32 x 2 (cue mix amps)

30 (2 Stereo echo return)

27 (Compressor Time Constants)

26 x2 ( Mix amps + VCA)

25 (Quad Bus Outputs)

21 (Status)

20 (VCA Groups)

Recapping on all the cards begins:

Myke, the original 651 is between 3 and 4U, I could make it exactly that size.. but would need better metalwork.

This is made (as usual) out of reclaimed ISEP rail based oddments and general rubbish. 4U is comfortable and easy to mount the backplane, and have a space for wiring, which can build up P2P.

I’ll reduce the hight once my front panel is planed and drilled. I got some large 4 deck dual concentric pots to accommodate for the cue send EQ’s.

Learnt a lot from my current Mk1 (which is fully working and sounds great) but you have to make it. ..to know how to make it better!

I'd like to start fitting these cards in. Thanks bro.

Hi Myke, the 345 series is discontinued by most suppliers, since last buying 110 pin versions 18 months ago.

This EDAC 120 pin (60 double sided) will work for all cards:

http://uk.mouser.com/ProductDetail/EDAC/345-120-520-201/?qs=kP3P12TjBhsHitDyDZA79g==

It does appear they have just 2 remaining in stock, so it maybe worth giving them a call.

The 025 card has 5 pairs of unused pins, so I've hacksawed the very top of the edac to allow the card to fit through.

The rest of the cards, I've de-pinned them down to 110, and then keyed them so they fit correctly each time.

The backplane is three of these: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=171019531129&ssPageName=ADME:L:OC:GB:3160

Myke, don't miss out on the Edge Conns, doubt they'll re-stock after the 51 are gone.

Other connectors:

Male Dsubs, I've talked to Jim, and he's going to look out his stock for Males with ribbon connector termination for S5, S3 and S4.

Female Dsubs, for audio connections.

20 way IDC headers PCB mount S5, S3 & S4 on the backplane and one extra S17 if you need the full 8 VCA groups: Got a big bag of these, will send you whats needed.

Hey bro, I ordered 6, about all I could afford at the moment.
$16.88 US each. DAMN!!!! $112 total with shipping.
We need to find a cheaper place.lol...
Hopefully Jim will have the others, plus I need to see if he has any scribble channel scrips for the 1st bucket. It never stops once you start. This is worse than a crack addiction.
Hehe
Thanks dude.

Extremly impressed, as always! I also thought about mixing meters, but I love the classic look of "VU only". 2-bus VUs of course always hammering the needle LoL so technically it does totally make sense to use a pair of these instead.

They are shipping directly from Singapore, takes a few weeks, but I'm very happy with the purchase. They have a number of small screens intended for cars and this one works great - runs on an original Apple DVI -> Video Adapter (Cinch Connection).

I’m loving my console running the computer.. however the small keyboard is just too annoying! So scored a G series one, that’s been reduced to spares., and completely de-wired.

Pretty please how this turned out, having adapted the input to the VCA card to accept all eight groups over one cable (E series uses 2 with identical pinouts)

Thanks! N

Norman,

I believe you'll find the BICC's in the Souriau SMS Quick Mating range; a sample:

Hi there. Not sure where you live but these are ITT (Bicc) Trident connectors and I have just looked them up on Farnell (Newark? in the USA).

SSL used 6-24 way versions of these plus the round ones (4-36 way?) for the power leads.

Here are the details for the 6 way free socket Bicc connector as used on the upper busscard connections. The picture actually shows a 12 way version so don't be put off by that.
The prices shown are in GB£ by the way. 70p now when they cost about 16p in the late 1980's!
