What is involved in smpte tracking for SSL computer? **SOLVED**
« on: February 14, 2016, 10:19:26 AM »
What are common ways to have automation slave to pt over smpte and what gear is needed. Is it possible to have the transport controls on the console send mmc to the pt comp. thanks.

Lot of us use the Konnektor box,  Protools is the master, and you can use the transport from the SSL, and the SSL computer will locate PT's to a cue point or stated time.

It's of course bi-directional, so hitting PT spacebar brings everything to life...and you can loop with the SSL automation chasing.

Lets get a little mini course in terms.

The area you are talking about is Sync, as in synchronizing the events or time of events.

It is often done in audio using a signal called LTC, longitudinal time control.

LTC is specified as a standard by an organization, the Society of Motion Picture Engineers, or SMPTE.

I have the ZX card by Desk Doctor installed in the SSL computer. I use a plugin called Lockstep, which coverts smpte to Mtc so Pro Tools follows. Works perfectly and eliminated the need for a sync I/0 box. Haven't had a single issue in the last 3 years (knock on wood).

Thanks for the clarification of acronyms waltzingbear. So the "Konnector" and the desk doctor" ZX card" are in use by the guild. Any one care to comment of the cost of these boxes/cards?

Mine was already installed when I bought console, so not sure what they are new, or if still made. I bet Bruce could crank one out though. Here's one that just happens to be on eBay. With this option, console is master. It basically tricks the SSL into thinking that PT is a tape machine.

Can any one tell me the differences in functionality between the zx card and the konnector ? It seems like there is more from the Konektor.

Just get 2Tools from Smart. They have one on Ebay. Clearmountain and Stent use that. I also use 2tools. Works Great.

The Konector I think has a one more feature not syre what. You have a better chance finding a used 2tools.

Had the 2Tools serial 02 in the 90's but the Konnektor is just much better and more flexible, and cheaper :-) ha
