Title: 5k owner-user
Post by: Studikken on August 20, 2014, 02:03:42 PM
Hi !

I'm just new in here. It is a really nice place to find a lot of informations on SSL boards.

Based around Paris France, Studio d'IKKEN is one of the few 5k owners around the world. I guess we are the very last one in France.
We are a music production studio, even if this desk wasn't meant to work in such an environement first.

I've been working in studios for 22 years, so I basically learned to work on 4k and 9k, as I was a free-lance engineer. In 2007, I had the chance to meet this beauty which was abandonned and was looking for a new home. That's the way I started to build this studio.
 :)

Thanks to Mattia for this incredible job here.
Really !

All the best for you all,
Myriam

Hi Myriam,
wlcome to the forum.

I own a 5K as well and know at least one other Person with a Studio based on the 5K here in Germany.

Mine was built for Film and I am (still) in the process of expanding it's capabilities towards audio (like stereo channels, subgroups, program bus etc.).

I am interested in the configuration of your console, like what modules do you have and your setup.
Do you have documentation for them all ?

Cheers,
Matt

Hi Matt !
Well ! So there are 3 of us here in Europe :)

What could I say ? It's a 32 channel(24x SL501IP ch + 8x SL505 IP ch.) made for broadcast and I mainly use it to record and mix music.
There are 28 SL 502 EQ installed (plus a load of spare ones ), 8 x SL 510 Compressors.
No computer, Total recall has been disabled by the previous guy who worked on its maintenance.

What do you have for a setup ?
If you want to expand yours, you might be interested in some of my spare pieces ...

Cheers,
Myriam

Hi Matt !

I know of at least one other owner here in Germany - so that makes 4 :-)

What could I say ? It's a 32 channel(24x SL501IP ch + 8x SL505 IP ch.) made for broadcast and I mainly use it to record and mix music.

Nice configuration.
I hope everything is working fine for you.

What do you have for a setup ?

I have a 56 channel desk with 14 501s. The rest are 505s
Mine is equipped with the SL542 EQs and Film routing up to 7.1.
What I am trying at the moment is to add stereo channels, stereo subgroups and a master fader.
That's not an easy task sine these desks were never built fo anthing stereo other than the auxes.
In addition to that, I have the SSL computer and a total recall computer which isn't implemented yet.

If you want to expand yours, you might be interested in some of my spare pieces ...

As mentioned before, I am focussing on stereo additions, so I could use a couple of SL522s, the stereo EQs. And I have to sort out a couple of problems that came from the transport I guess.
It's still a lot of work to be done until I am able to use it the way I want. But I am looking forward to get this done not too far from today.

Cheers
Matt

Very glad to see another 5k desk still alive !

(and hello Matthias !)

We should bundle up all 5k info we can get.

Germany : -2
For now, I can tell there are at least 2 5ks in Germany. Pink studio and the one of Matthias.
But I do know there should also be an 80mono channel one somewhere in germany, with 510 implemented in each channel (man, that'll be a powerhungry beast...). That one was for sale on Ebay a few years back. It got sold in one piece, but I don't know where it went.
Originally, there were quite an amount of 5ks sold in Germany.

Austria : -1
In Austria theres a 36 channel broadcast 5k in somebody's homestudio, a collector of synths and stuff. More of a museum  than a real studio. This one came originally from the broadcast company in Zurich, zwitserland, who had 3. The other 2 are decommisioned, sold in pieces and the remaining parts are thrown away. A friend of mine bought these at the time, and from him I bought most of the parts of my own console.

UK :..... No idea.
I don't think there's a working 5k left in the UK. But there are a few downsized ones in the UK.
The last original one I know of was for sale through Ebay a few years back. Many channels, but very basic IIRC. It was from a studio in Birmingham, and if memory serves me well, it was for radiostuff, not for musicproduction. It had computerproblems and was not operational anymore at the time of sale, it didn't pass audio anymore due to the defective computer....

France : -1
Studikken studio, added to the list :)

Italy :...
Not an original one, but a custom thing :
At this moment I'm helping a guy out in italy with building a fairly simple single stereobus summingmixer. I have modified an Amek PSU for the SSL, and I have pre wired the buscards for him. He's currently finishing the wiring for the I/O to the patchpanel.  guess it'll be ready soon :)
4x 505/507/506 + 2x 521/527/506+ 2x 595/506, into 1x 557/506/578. The channels are prewired for use with EQ. Currently the summing is done balanced passive, but in the future we will probably add active summing using the fethybridcards. 2 mono auxes will also be added later on.  Currently he has 1x 510 compressor and a 542, but I don't expect it'll take very long before he has eq in all channels.

US - 1
As far as I know, the last 5k in the US is the one of Skywalker Sound. Although I'm not even sure if they still have it... All other 5k's that I know of, are disassembled and sold in pieces....

Australia : 1
Can't recall where, but I know there's a 5k broadcast version in a studio in Australia somewhere.

Netherlands : -1
Only mine, also not an original one and without computer.
Mine is built up from scrap and parts gathered up from all around the world : UK, USA, Zwitserland, Germany, France, Denmark, Ukraine, and Uruguay.
Broadcastversion 5k 14channel. No computer, not even the SL581. I once had many more channels, but I decided to cut it down again. This is the perfect setup for me as I use it along with DAW based recording and mixing.
The channels :
-8 basic stereochannels (SL527+506)
-2 stereochannels with SL521/522/527/506 and 578meter
-4 monochannels 505/542/506/574
-2 monochannels 501/trident EQ (diy)/506/574 .

Subgroups :
3x 524/506/578. One with diy Neumann 492 eq, one with racked Amek BC2 stereo eq, and one with MS/Stereo insert and MS lowcutfilters (18dB /octave, copy of the SL501 filters).
Mainbus is a 552 IMO with my GSSL sidechainmodification.
And a lot of other patchable stuff in the console. 2 Nite 3d eq's, 2x SL510 compressor, 1x 555F TBcompressor, 502 eq, DAW controllers, Amek BC2 micpres, SSL 9k clone pres. SLC72 PPM meter, normal VUs, a bunch of analyzers....

Aux : currently 2 mono., although I used to have 513s and 523s on each channel earlier on.  One of these days I'll add again 1 or 2 stereo auxes , but this time using a VCA midi automation along with an SL594 summingmodule. I'll be using the postVCA send lines from the S501 cable from each channel.

So, feel free to add more 5k mohicans !

:)

Well, the email did reach me, and it was a very nice response, it sure made me smile !!!!

But didn't I reply that ? Maybe I had too many things going on at that time..... If so, I apologise for not responding !

But it's good to see you here !  ;)

As response to adding the stereo channels to a 5k filmconsole : It's not because of the auxes that it won't work. It's because the 597 panners and the filmrouting. The 597 panners only accept mono inputs. Simply replacing the 597 panner with a 527 stereopanner is  not possible because the filmrouting isn't compatible with the 527's outputs. Besides, the filmpanner and broadcast panner modules have different buscards and are not interchangable.
I don't say it's impossible, but it's not easy at all. Not to even mention TR/IR......

No problem - things like these happen :-)
I am happy that it wasn't because of something I did to upset you.

Regarding the stereo channels - actually : should we make a new thread for that ?

I already introduced a matching buscard for the SL527 and also exchanged the routing buscards and the routing modules.
My 'half stereo bay' now consists of : patchbay -> SL521 -> SL503 -> SL527 -> stereo routing buscard (can't remember the number at  the moment) -> program out -> bus 31,32 on film routing buscard -> patchbay
So I dedicated busses 31 and 32 as 'program out' left and right so far.
Unfortunately, I don't have any SL522 (stereo EQ) yet - but I could use 2 stereo compressors instead

I addition, I can route each of the stereo channels to film busses pairs 25/26, 27/28, 29/30 ...... although I have to repair some of the routing logic - probably bad cables.

My final configuration shall be (at least) :
- 4 stereo channels
- 4 stereo subgroups (maybe 2 subgroups and 2 IMOs)
- 1 master fader

Actually, I am more after the stereo subgroups than stereo channels .... just want to save channelstrip space for stereo incoming signals.
At the moment it's more a trial and error what maybe can be done.

Btw - I have the O/L led lit up on all 4 SL527 .....
I am sure I don't have to much current or some weird signal coming in.
We spent about a complete sunday to get the power right.
And there's also no signal coming in to the SL527.

Do you have an idea what could cause this ?
I tried to figure it out in the schematics but I am not very good at that.
In the manual they say, that the O/L is customer configurable - but I couldn't find where this can be checked.

Anyway - if you can find some time to get back, that'll be great.

Oh .... ya, you're right, TR/IR will be interesting. Don't know, if I have to the 'software' that there are different and unusual modules in the desk.
I thought (so far) this has only to be done for total recall so the software knows what to look for in the desk.

Thanks
Matt

Well, I surely have some suggestions, although I don't know the exact features of the 597 panner.
You jumpered the S524's ? (Jumper pin 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6, and 7 to 8).
And you jumpered the inserts of the 527 ?
I have more suggestions, but you're right : It's better to start a new topic for this.  It's better that you start the topic because your console is the subject :)
Send me a link and I'll chime in !

By the way, the SL 520 compressors can't be used via the S502 dyn/eq flatcable connection : They only have balanced I/O. At least, as far as I know.

Greetings,

Paul.

Hi Everyone,
I had already introduced myself on the other forum talking about the BBC Maida Vale 4k as i work at Maida Vale for my day job (we have two 9000J's).
But i'm a 5k DIY owner and recieved a lot of help from Paul over the years via the GroupDIY forum which i'm very grateful for.
The thread of my on/off build is here :
http://groupdiy.com/index.php?topic=41573.0

When i get some time I'll put some more info here.

Great to see more 5K's out there and more people to talk to about them, now what do i do, see if you guys are selling pan modules and faders and go the whole hog and build mine into a proper desk or what ? ;)
