SSL 4k Tech badly needed
« on: October 05, 2014, 06:16:43 AM »
Hey guys,

Is there an SSL tech around who knows his way around the 4k desk, including routing understanding from the channel to the mix bus, including all the headroom information?

Cheers

Thank you for your concern but my inquiry is rather educational in nature :)

I'd gladly pay for any assistance.

I suggest you get the operator manual and read it. It is very educational.

Don't make such silly suggestions if you don't know what you are talking about, I have a desk and the operating manual.

I would've liked to know what the actual specified headroom of the master bus by ssl is and whether a channel at full capacity (26 dbU) gets chopped down to +16 according to the plasma meters or really goes in at 26, which the plasmas can't catch and always just max out.

Do you have an audio millivoltmeter or similar test gear? Put it on an output and find out. Incidentally your calculation takes no account of voltage drop in the opamp which means that it won't do rail to rail. Take a couple of volts off either side.
I would imagine you can recalibrate the plasma meters to indicate the maximum headroom. The plasma meter will not govern the output headroom.

The quad buss gets pretty crunchy at +20 dBu, channel input is about the same.
