I'm about to try these leds for VU meters, warm white.

Haven't got them yet though so they may not be what you want.

Here is what I did on my 6k/e:

I used RGB LED stripes and put them between the bulp holder and meter.
The (still) analog RGB Dimmer sits above the patchbay to play around with.

Check the pictures.
Very cheap, very bright if needed, light color is totaly adjustable, some work, yes,
but in the end you can mix your color and impress your studio cats, dogs and clients. (and yourself of course, hehe)
:)

now i would like to have installed digital RGB stripes, which came out after I put them in:
you could then color code VU sections as needed! :)
(and also make a hell of a lightshow!)

Hi guys,

My 6K already had VU leds original upgrade from SSL, but what I noticed is that the resistor used to accommodate the bulb/LED replacement generates a bit of heat. If your consider the heat generated by all VUs than you have a small heater on the meter bridge...

What it would be nice would be to have some kind of ON/OFF switch so that you could just turn them off (all at once) when not needed, thus avoiding lots of heat dissipating into the room.

Cheers,

Artur

Hi Artur,
Interesing, didn't know ssl actually made led replacements for the VU meters.
I undertstand you want to keep it like that.

The original bulps where also very hot anyway AND so dim I often checked if they where even on.

My mod keeps the VUs really cool and almost no heat is generated as I am powering the stripes with an external
switching psu. ;)

Yeah mine is an SSL 6K G+ from circa 93 and it's all LEDs with exception to groups/tapes and center section (which I will be doing myself). All the rest is led already and was made originally by SSL.

It actually looks nice the VU meters, they are not very dimmed nor very bright and have an orange feel.

The LED themselves are not generating the heat from what I can tell, what is generating the heat is the resistor they had to put to lower the voltage. So actually using LEDs you are just gaining longevity/reliability which you didn't had on the old filament lamps. But in terms of heat and wattage I suppose you should be around the same ballpark.

Cheers,

Artur

That's a clean looking 6K you have, Artur.  What year is it?

thanks guys.
we actually were able to move a couple around, and combined w/ a small bag we found of NOS from SSL, got the VUs all light up.

on to other things now!
