Hey there,
a client received their new power supply from GRS for their 4048E in December, unfortunately it has had several issues and has yet to function properly.
When first received, it smoked upon fire up, it was sent back and they said they fixed it.
When tried the second time it turned on OK but logic voltage was extremely high, it seems that it is not referencing correctly.
At this point GRS dropped off the edge of the planet, no one has been able to contact them for months now.
No service docs were sent with this. It seems to be full of off the shelf power supply modules, but there are many other modules, some fabricated, and a whole lot of wiring without any ID.
Add to this the incredibly disastrous accident Jeff of Fantasy Platinum studios has had, he was helping provide some support for GRS while they where "away" but is no longer available.
I read postings here of folks who have this unit and it is working well, so there is hope if someone has the service docs or an idea of a contact for someone who knows this beast?

Carefully refurbish the Original (Funky Junk in the UK are doing a great job, and yes G-Series supplies, and the ones delivered to Japan are preferred over the E-Series supply) or get the Atomic Instruments-supply (great, but expensive for us in the EU at the current $/€-rates).
I wouldn't trust anything else.

Not to be painfully obvious but there is no hope of them getting a refund to put the $ into something else if they can't get in touch of anyone at the company... :P
I have a feeling that the reason many folks are getting replacement power supplies (besides the fact the the factory unit is such an incredible PIA to work on) is their supply is either dead or dying.
Eventually that mains P/T will go then it is a boat anchor. There is no replacement available and the cost of having one made is well beyond what anyone is asking for their version replacement supply. They do go, in my 20 + years servicing these I have replaced several bad P/Ts, back in the days when they were still available.
There are problems with the factory unit design, the audio secondary voltages are around 60%+ too high causing the regulators to work way to hard.
Ever wonder why the fans are blowing out so much heat?
I imagine this was an effort to make it work anywhere on the planet with AC mains way out of spec, but in the 1st world it just makes the supply fail often.
What I have done for some clients with dual supplies is to replace the factory P/T on one of them with a properly rated 20/20 volt secondary P/T (instead of 40/40 like the factory P/T) that just runs the audio rails. There is no need for the 2nd set of other supply voltages unless your console is really large.
Then it runs cool and never fails, and you can store the factory P/T as a spare for the main supply.
But of course none of this solves the current (no pun intended) issue!

Found out that GRS was sold to a company in the UK so no USA shop anymore. We bought one of their PSUs for our SSL 4040 that is AWESOME and works great.
We went to buy a second PSU from GRS for our other SSL we just got (yeah, got a great deal) but then found out that they were closed down because of the sale. BUMMER!
Even if your GRS SSL psu has a problem, we'll buy it off you. We have two great techs here and since we have one of their PSUs already, I'm sure we can find the problem.
Please PM me ASAP! We'll buy it for what you paid and have it picked up. These are very cool systems.

Does anybody know what studio this is with all the GRS related problems?
I think it is in Florida and I would like to reach out and help them solve
their issues. According to another forum it took out a bunch of logic in their desk. What a nightmare!
It is also interesting GRS is still selling psu's on Ebay and they return messages regarding
new sales but cannot be contacted if there is a problem. :-\
