4K,6K,8K Series / 82E01 Unknown Mods
« Last post by mike_signo on January 12, 2025, 09:20:34 PM »
Hi guys,

Looking for information on any known / standard modifications carried out on the 82E01 Channel Input card.

I’ve received two E series channels for repair, one of which has 48V permanently enabled and a pad in place of the traditional phantom switch, and both of which have faulty line input - one which is missing components, and the other has a modded sub-board added on which is in a state of disrepair.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

4K,6K,8K Series / SSL 681 keyboard switches info
« Last post by jimlfixit on January 12, 2025, 04:58:51 PM »
Hi you lot.
I worked at SSL from 1980-87 and made some of the 681 keyboards plus lots of other stuff inside the console and most of the leads back then. There are two lots of switches on the keyboard for typing etc. I don't know the actual names of the manufacturers at the time as I just assembled various things and some manufacturers got taken over, changed their names etc (a bit like the main Highland switches back then).
I don't know the name for the smaller alpha numeric switches but, if it helps the bigger ones on the top of the keyboard were commonly referred to as 'Cherry caps'. Whether this is just those big black keycaps or not, I don't know but I think I remember the actual switches being white and green in colour although my memory may fail me over 45 years (I am now 68!).
Both sets of switches were vertical PC mount versions and there must be some modern day versions available somewhere out there surely?
If you need to have a new modern day keyboard attached instead, it may take some time and effort to link it up to the ribbon cable on the keyboard. Good luck with that and I don't know the answer.
Hope this helps from Jim Lassen, the Forum Wiring moderator based in Maidenhead, Bucks, UK and if you need DL connectors and/or SSL looms made, get in contact and check out my Facebook page link below which needs to be updated a lot!

Thatīs great information, thank you very much!
I would probably look for a different solution then, to mount all the necessary cards in a 19" rack chassis or something.
I think thatīd be the better way then.
Thanks again.

4K,6K,8K Series / Switch light on when switch is off
« Last post by Mattsepanic on January 05, 2025, 06:52:53 PM »
Hello gang.   Hope all had a great holiday.   I’m doing some tech work before the student s get back.  And I have an “external to studio” switch that is light off.   When pressed it does get. A little brighter.   Switch itself is working great.  Passing signal appropriately
.  In fact I just replaced the  switch with a new one.  So switch should be good.  Maybe not my wiring.  TIAyou guys are the best !!

That sounds like a job. My center section is 160mm wide. A bucket of 8 is 324mm wide. Width wise it would fit. The center section rides on those stupid slide rails that always break so those would need to be mounted on the frame. Each bucket of 8 has one set of connector boards on the bottom. One on the top, one on the bottom. Looking at the bottom of my console the 651 big MRAC connectors at the top certainly wouldn't clear the channel connector main boards. You could cut the connector main boards at the half point and solder up wires to continue the busses but that sounds like a big pain.
Good luck with this idea.

What he said. If they go bad replace them. Folks used to think the Signetics were the best sounding 5534. There was a time in the eighties after the Gs came out that people were trying to hot rod their Es buy putting in op amps with faster slew rates like the Burr Brown OPA627A. Also increasing the 100uf coupling caps with 220uf. I know of a console here in Nashville where the tech only did those mods to the left half of the console. Nobody seemed to notice a difference, so he never finished the right side.

4K,6K,8K Series / NE5534 question
« Last post by Alex J Kramer on January 02, 2025, 04:00:54 PM »
Merry Xmas & Happy NY to everyone!
Should I change all Signetics 5534 with the fresh TI5534AP just to extend console life?
Do Signetics sounds different or that's just an Audiofoolia and it's Ok to use modern TI's?

4K,6K,8K Series / 4k SL651 center section frame
« Last post by gertius on January 02, 2025, 06:23:36 AM »
Hi guys,
do you know if a 4k center section could fit into a regular channel bucket steel frame? Or does it need itīs own frame?

For example letīs say I buy a bucket of 8 channels and at some point would find a spare center section.
Could I just take out 4 channels of the bucket and place the center section beside the other 4?
If the center section frame is different, could the channel frame be modded to fit?
Does the pcb get in the way where the channels are plugged in?
If so, is it one pcb for 8 channels, so Iīd lose the other 4 channels too if I put in the center section?

Am I correct in the assumption that the only things that happen soundwise in the centersection is summing amps (82e26), bus compressor (82e26 and 82e27) and balanced outputs (82e25)? Apart from that itīs mostly monitoring, VCA groups and mode of operation, which does not directly affect the sound so much?

Thanks!
