Site security
« on: November 04, 2024, 12:20:57 PM »
Following on from @Jim Lassen's post yesterday re data loss, I notice that this site is not using the HTTPS protocol.
Is there any reason for this, as that provides better security?
Kevin.

This forum has started many years ago and I guess technology has moved on ever since.
I have looked at moving this onto a better platform such as wordpress but it's not possible to simply copy the database over.

I am open to suggestions on what everyone thinks it's best and also if any of you wants to work with me on the back end to make it better please make yourself known!

Hi Matt,
Sorry, I had thought it was just a simple matter of obtaining an SSL/TLS certificate and changing links in the website to HTTPS.
But doing a bit of searching it is obviously a lot more complicated than that!
Seems a lot of current website software needs updating first, so as you say, it may need a different platform.

I'm clueless when it comes to that sort of stuff, hopefully one of the other members will be able to help.
Kevin.

Hi all. Jim Lassen here in the UK.
It's frustrating to know that the existing website, which is probably the number one in the World for SSL consoles, cannot be just transferred to a newer and better version and I have no idea how to make the existing one more secure either. My posts are all still here (mostly wiring stuff) and I still have all the pictures but, to match my posts up with the pictures I have again would take a long time.
Matt and Andy Henderson started this in 2012 I believe, I joined and we had a chat at my place about then. Some years later (2017???) some complete bastard hacked in to it and all the pictures were deleted (for what?). That has put me off posting more stuff ever since but I do have loads more info to post with pictures when I know it is more secure.

One or more of you out there may be able to offer advice on this surely?
