Random SSL Projects Update
« on: March 21, 2022, 07:28:29 AM »
Hi All,

A bit has been going on over the last few months that has been keeping me very busy.

First up is the refurbishment of the SL651E, and the reverse engineering of the centre section cards. The cards are almost all done, excepting the 33 & 34. Parts availability is becoming a serious issue.

Last weekend I picked up an entire rack with 2x 661E PSUs, Changover Unit, 665E PSU, G+ Computer with TR and 4/100C processor!!!, and a remote keyboard. The computer started up perfectly, and TR worked as well, but the PSU was in real bad shape and let off the smoke of death, so I've stripped it and turning it in to a switch mode PSU.

Lastly I've been looking in to the TR computer, and have started reverse engineering that. CPU and HRG boards are done - more as a backup if my current ones fail - but with hopes to create something as a more modern replacement.

Thanks Matt! It's certainly keeping me busy. I have a long list of tasks for the coming months ahead.

For now...
Completed the switchmode conversion on the computer PSU.
Replaced all fans in the computer with 12v and a separate power supply.
Fixed the remote keyboard - it was a blown RS232 chip.
Fixed the video distribution card. Recap, and blown BC184 which provides the 7v for the DS3630 sync buffers. That chip is very sensitive to having the correct supply voltage.
Bought a cheap "working" Dell 17" monitor on FB marketplace ($5). Turned out the backlight driver transistors were shot, so another thing to fix, but all good now.

Lots of projects on the go right now. I probably need to stop and complete a few of the half-finished ones.

Over the last month I've been helping on fixing up a 6048E with plasmas. The SL688V section has a lot of logic issues that need to be worked through. As a test of myself, I cloned the 158 board in record time. Should be able to try it out at the next visit in a few weeks.

Converted another power supply over to switch mode. Not sure what I'll do with the last power supply, and the changeover. Was thinking of turning them in to rack drawers to store stuff, but keeping the SSL faceplates :)

RML CPU and HRG cards are coming along. Will be a challenge to track down all the necessary ICs for these, though there is a site Jameco, that stocks most of these.

Lastly, the SL651 is slowly getting done. Waiting on some long lead time items.

Nice. You rock man.

What are the RML CPU and HRG cards?

Nice. You rock man.

What are the RML CPU and HRG cards?

The CPU is the Total Recall computer which is a separate Z80 processor to the main automation computer.
The HRG is the High Resolution Graphics card that goes with it.
These two cards make up the core of the the Total Recall system.

Anthony.

Thanks you sir.

I should of scrolled further to see the other post.

Thanks for your hard work.

I'd be happy with just a floppy replacement but I think you already did that.
