4k vs 8k difference on sonics?
« on: November 12, 2021, 10:29:49 AM »
Hi all,

A very quick one. I know that all 8Ks can be different beasts, being mainly custom ordered. But I wondered what is the consensus on the difference in sonics of a 4KG and a 8KG. Mainly for the use of music. The channel strips are identical excluding the bussing, so is it just really about the Master Buss?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks TK

I'm going to watch replies to this with interest, as I honestly don't know the answer to this one! The 8000 was developed by the service department rather than the design department so I wasn't really involved (we were busy designing what became the 9000 at the time).

The feed through the two main stereo paths should sound identical to the 4000, but if you use the audio sub groups I don't remember what the 8 bus sub-mixer design was like - although I have a strange feeling I may have designed it! (From vague memory - we are talking 35 years ago! - I think we developed it for an earlier project, and then it was incorporated into the 8k.)

As you say, the channel strips are basically identical bar the routing switching.

Cheers,

Andy

I have 4 SSL's, one of those in an 8000 and it sounds identical to my 4000G. There are some buffer cards attached to the rear of the 8000 that aren't on my 4000G and I'm not quite sure if there is a G+ feature or an 8000 feature. Considering we don't ever use the A B C D busses, the mix bus is identical. The 651 cards are all the same except for one, the film routing card instead of the 24 card which means nothing when running in stereo anyhow.

Thanks @Cleartrack. Love your studio and social, by the way!

OK, that seals the deal, I'll be back with info in a few days.
