Title: The center section rails of doom.

It seems the "inner" free floating rail never wants to be it the right place, reeking
havoc on a stable center section and human limbs.

I have never heard of it slipping loose ever so maybe you should unscrew the two parts and get them to work properly out of the console and put them back.

From memory, there is a metal tab on the console part of the slider which needs to be pushed in to release it so it goes back down after being clicked and held in the upright position. Maybe that needs some adjustment but it can't have broken as it's all metal.

I put the console together, Centre section was left in during shipping, found "drawer rails" in a box that i assumed were from an actual desk... Tossed them..

When it came time to look at the centre section, i quickly realized when the tech told me there were rails missing.. ones that look like drawer rails.... DOH!

I am racking my brain (I think I still have one but the memory is fading somewhat!) about where SSL bought the 651 (and 688 rack) sliders from.
Need to ask some people who worked there then and investigate but, hopefully, I can post some good news on this soon.

I have spoken to a few ex SSL people so far and they can't remember exactly where the 651 rails were bought from but I have a few more to contact and will let you know as and when I find an answer so, bear with me on this.

I guess it was too long ago for them to remember (about 40 years) or that they were not involved in the buying process but someone, somewhere will know and I think I have enough old contacts in order to find the answer hopefully.

I will post when I find out more but I still think that, as the sliders were all metal, it may be worthwhile taking the console fitted slider out and adjusting the movable bit that rises upwards in order that it stays in position, otherwise, it could be that metal fatigue has affected it after many decades. I do remember that, even though they were new at the time in the late 1970's, one end of a 651 would sometimes fall down and may need the slider assembly adjusting.

It may be just a case of applying some WD40 type stuff and/or adjusting the position of something within the slider.

I have contacted them with the details to see if they still have them, or if they make a modern day equivalent.

I t would be great to get a new set but its almost safer to just remove the rails and not trust them at all once they start getting flaky. I was bit by one the other day, gashed my hand on the corner, but at least I saved it from slamming. It easily could remove fingers if caught it wrong or not expecting it. One had latched and the other one wouldnt, and in the process of searching for the snap the other one released.

Ive put metal stock under the bottom across the profiles to rest it on before, looks like this might be something I just go to from now on. All it takes is someone to not manage the latches right once and once one is gone it takes my trust in the other one with it.

Post by: radardoug2 on July 24, 2024, 10:34:13 PM: The way I have found to work with these is always to have two people. One gets under the console and pushes up on the unit, the person on top then pulls the module up.
Repeat in reverse to put it down.

I just remove them by pulling them up and flipping them on the right side of the console on top of a pillow. I have another SSL 4K (one of the oldest SSL's in North America) and it's 651 rails work fine so far.
