Title: Floppy drives... what's proprietary?

My floppies are going south as I mentioned, I'm being quoted some pretty spectacular prices to have them replaced...

I'm curious what is actually proprietary here? anyone know?

I'd like to know the same.. would love to rebuild the my old floppy drives for backup

Hi Dan,

I've bought a couple of FD-235HF Teac drives which are apparently the same as those in the floppy rack. I'm going to give it a try, apparently if the SSL board is installed it will work.. we'll see.

I'll report back as soon as I have some info, good or bad.

Hi,

I didn't end up trying the floppy drives as my G+ drives are now working fine. It seems the DC loom connector was a little loose connecting to the computer motherboard.

TOUCH WOOD!!

Dang it's tough for that connector to be "a little loose"!  Good thing to reseat it yearly and apply the smallest amount of pro gold on the pins before, just a swipe.
Those TEAC drives are the correct drive but they need to be configured correctly.
Goes back to using them with the AKAI S900.  You could buy your own drive for $50 rather than $150 from AKAI, but you had to change the density and reverse the parallel connector.
The drives in the 90's still had jumper pins to change configuration but into the oughties they were re-designed with 0 ohm soldered resistors as jumpers.  Tried to reverse engineer the correct config at the time but was not successful.

Yea I need a new floppy drive as for some reason when I boot up it's not seeing the reel disk. I have 3.5's

I took the 3.5 unit apart as the floppy drive lights were not coming on. Swapped drive reseated power cable and scsi.

When I boot up it says reel disk not ready.

Yea lots of old stock teac fd235's on ebay but it seems we have the 7700 model number and yea with a certain jumper setup.

Anyone care to comment.

Cleaned heads with Q-Tip, reseated cards, new floppies.........all good now.

Side note floppies and controllers are not moded by SSL so easy to find replacements on Ebay.
