Title: SSL G computer and TR issues
Post by: xmax on May 14, 2013, 08:40:30 PM
Hello, I have worked on these desk's for years but have never dove into the computer much.
A client of mine has a 56ch frame loaded with 48ch the first bucket on the left had stereo
modules when it was new but it is currently empty. The deal: the computer has 2 sets
of analog input and output cards, it was set up so it only uses the 50way ribbons not
the 20way ribbons that you would normally use on consoles larger the 40ch.
according to the computer configuration guide one in/out card can handle up to
56ch. Since one of his in/out cards appears to be dead he should be able to
switch over to one set of i/o cards and reconfigure the software, is this correct?
And how would one do this? also his TR gets stuck when he tries to play a
set up, I hope this is also related to the i/o card problem. thanks! N

you should be able to if my understanding is correct, need to get into the config stuff, watch it Berno.

Keith would be a good authority on that.

Sticking TR is often either the switches on the Mux module on the channel being set wrong/funky and the board/computer being set to care, turn that off for testing.  Do you have the same number of channels? that may not be helpful if not set correctly.

I am having a very similar issue. My bucket 41-48 won't get singal back from the computer. Am in a 2 card situation and I too have heard it possible to run on a one card system, but I have no clue on how to reconfigure the reconsole. Along with this my total recall sceen is coming back just way green lines when using the Dramastic video screen.  Any information that one could provide would be extremely use.

What is not coming back from the computer? VCA, TR?

Most of the various configuration changes are in an area of the computer that requires a password to access. Its in the front of the manual somewhere as well as the process to get there. I recall the password being BERNOULLE but could have a spelling mistake. I don't have a manual at hand, so can't look it up. There are many layers of menus and pages, so familiarize yourself. Its not rocket science, some of the stuff can be a bit arcane, usually those are not applicable to your situation. My comment about BERNO is a reference the computer makes when you correctly enter the correct mode to access those pages.

You should be able to get composite video off the GREEN bnc on the back of the computer to test the TR computer out. monochrome only. Remember its all PAL.

Thanks! is this info in the computer service manual? because we don't have one yet. and what switch are you
referring to when you say care? I know there is a don't care on the TR card how should those be set? thanks again. N

Does anyone know where we can get a computer service manual?  Does anyone have one in pdf format anywhere?

Norman is the tech on my console.  It is the one he is referring to in the initial post.

We found out that the second set of analog input and output cards are working but maybe not 100%. We are able to buckets to respond to the first 2 connections of 50 ways on the front of the computer on the left side. The computer panels shows these as stereo A-H and Patch VCAs. If we plug the buckets into any 50 ways belows these on the front we get no VCA communication with the console.

Also we have the Dramastic box for the video conversion, but we cannot get a TR screen at all or any other screen but the base SSL screen. Any suggestions or do think this is related to our TR problem over all.

It doesn't seem like video sync is being put out by which ever cards produce it when you hit the 1,2,3,4 buttons at the top to go to other screens. Those screen look like the main SSL screen if you pull the sycn bnc from the Dramastic box. Can anyone point me in the correct direction?

You type SSL 4000 then hit execute button, then setup button

I did that. After typing SSL 4000 [EX], the computer just hangs. I have to hit cancel to get back to a prompt.

Here is what I get when I hit the 1,2,3,4 button above the 5" monitors.  I seems like the unit isn't receiving sync properly.  It works fine on the SSL button.

mmmm LCD screen??!? are you sure its ok?
I would run a normal CRT screen on it ....I have had endless problems with LCD because you need a converting (a proper) box between the computer and the screen otherwise NADA...and I have the feeling this is exactly what you are experiencing...

He has the Dramastic Audio video converter box, it works ok for a while, then fuzes out a little,
His main problem is his computer, if you look at the first page we discuss some of the
problems. Unfortunately I am no longer at his sweet space, so he has to battle it alone.
Thanks! N

After some more phone calls and research, it seems that Total Recall isn't booting at all. The other buttons I was pressing are for alternate video feeds and will never be used.

Any ideas on how to get the recall computer to boot. The main computer is fine. We have cleaned all the edges and connectors and have reseated all the chips.

If you type !TES and then T, then O, press a fader button and i.e turning the gain knob should give readings at 40

first you need to make sure that the TR comp is booting or not.

If its not booting, then its time for serious sleuthing. Did it used to boot recently? Are you sure?

Sometimes the eproms are the probelm, other times ?? If you send it out to anyone, be prepared to spend at least $1k.

We got a new Z80 chip but no luck. When you do the TR object test, the computer shows all the values and responds. It just won't play back a setup at all.

I had major TR issues, all of the problems were with the centre section, blown 100ohm resistors were the majority of the headaches.

I would get under there, that's where a lot of the global stuff happens with the TR.

This was the 'Total Recall Bus Driver' card Stef?

Yep Andy, It's a separate card on the E. On my G it's an all in one with the keyboard board.

Stef, thanks for that info, most of my Past life has been in the world of 'E's 0:-) so never understood the change with the G keyboard :)

It looks like I lost my configuration somewhere. I put in a TR card from another studio and I get recall, but now I don't get any recall information sent to the channels and the computer doesn't respond to any faders when trying to do a mix. It responds to the center VCA faders, but that is it.

After SSL 4000 [EX] SETUP [EX] where do you go from there?

'SETUP' followed by Execute. When you get the prompt asking "Do you want to see more?" press M. This will take you into the maintenance pages. Now press C for console options, and then C for configuration. Make sure you are set to "CUSTOM CONFIGURATION" and CUSTOM BARCHART" and then press END once. Now press 'O' for objects and you should see a vertical list of objects, ie MASTER FADER, VCA's, GROUPS, etc. Curser down to "FADERS" and press 'RUB'. This should set the number to zero, and all the LED's on the faders should go out (not on the VCA groups though). Now press the fader switch on fader 1, and the LED's should light, the computer should beep, and your fader count should go to 1. Carry on down the console in order, and this will re-assign your channel numbers on the console to the computer. If you miss one, or make a mistake, just press 'RUB' again and start over. Once you have done this, press END - warning, the computer sometimes takes a moment to sort this out, so don't worry if nothing happens for a short while after you press END.

Now in theory, you should be able to just keep hitting END until you are out of the maintenance page, and I usually then type in 'BEGIN' and 'EXECUTE' to do a soft reboot. Go into the test menu or just start a new mix to see if your faders are working correctly. It is possible that we might need to do a new barchart as well to make everything show up correctly, but hopefully this will carry over and be OK.
