Title: Group buy / feeler CF8203 plastic stand off
Post by: Matt Sartori on July 07, 2015, 08:54:03 AM
Hello everybody,
I am starting this thread regarding the plastic stand off for the total recall cards.
I am getting them made exactly like the originals but in white colour and it looks like the most viable way (due to possibly small quantity) will be 3D printing.
The set up costs for a injection moulding are around £1,800 which means that a a single piece will end up costing around £1.40.

Price to be confirmed but if we order 1,000 we are in the region of £0.65 each.price will drop further if we go above 2,000+. delivered to me in 10 days.
shipping on top.

please write your name in the thread with quantities and we see how many of us are interested. I will update quantities as we go along.
Mattia.

alternatively send us an email:

UPDATE on 31-07-15
production is on the way and will have the full set of 1,000 by end of next week (first week of August)
in the meantime I have done some more tests and here is a picture with two types of screws:
UNC4-40 on the left hand side and M3 on the right, both of which work REALLY REALLY well albeit me preferring the UNC as the thread is slightly wider.

Hi Mattia.

Wil here, you can definitely put me down for 96 for sure and if it will drop the price further I can put in for another 24.

Thanks.

Hi Wil,
thank you, I have ordered the first set of samples today which I will try on this week and leave them in the console for a few days to see what happens.

The price I have been quoted it's for a 1,000, we'll have to go up to 2,000 to get the next discount price but at this rate it might take us 20 years to generate enough interest to get to that much.
Having said that if the prototypes are good and I am satisfied with material and resilience I will give the go ahead anyhow and keep whatever is left in stock for my personal use or for anybody else that might need them in the future.

So it will happen in let's say 2 weeks time.  ;)

Mattia.

The prototypes have been delivered.
I am extremely pleased with the result, albeit being a "3D print out" and really nothing more than a simple piece to design on autocad... the material it's extremely resilient and easy to work on.
the original stand offs had always bad threads: you screw it in few times and then it's gone.

the positive thing about this material is that is just enough flexible to allow the screw to cut its own thread in and then simply to be tighten up securely.
I have tried and forced the thread several times (FORCED!) nothing... it just stays there.
I have tried to take a picture of one with thread, not sure it pays justice.

Cutted one with a knife and it just about chipped one end..and you cant really tell from the picture anyway such is small.

so the say that you need an hobby...
I found mine: im going to sit in my garden and spray paint 1,000 of these next week, they will look awesome.
take pleasure of the simple things in life..

spot the (original SSL) odd one out  in the pictures below. (taken with an iphone)

Quick question. Why the need to paint them black?
They are unseen in the desk, and look great in white anyway!  :)

I suppose to make them look like the originals, but if nobody is bothered I just leave them white.

So yesterday I went to see Mr. Pete Higgs with the little stand offs.
Apart from being very pleased with it (especially because the thread actually works and its much stronger than the one you could get from the original part) he has ordered a few hundred himself..

few pictures to show how they sit:

Well done Mattia for getting these 03 card standoffs sorted.
I think the original SSL versions were some sort of medium / hard nylon versions in (nearly) white natural colour. They could take a M3 x 6mm pozi pan screw which would cut it's own thread (the original hole diameter is so important for this ... too much and it became loose and too small, it could break it).

The balance was to have the right material which could be self tapping and still take multiple fixings over time. In my experience, I have never known one of the original ones to fail (PS: they were never meant for 4.40 screws ... 6 BA maybe but not 4.40!). Hope this helps somewhat.

Hi Jim,
thank you for your comments. I had to try with whatever looked like a good type of screw.
it worked in my case with 4.40 but I suppose people should try with your suggestions.
I have a lot of stories of people trying to glue the screw into the standoff when the thread goes....

Hi,

Does someone still have any standoff? I would be interested on buying some of them.

Thanks in advance.
