I’ve been the in-house tech at studios with SSLs since 1981. I’ve never actually owned one.
The opportunity to purchase an 8048GB appeared and I jumped on it.
It’s an ex-MTV mobile console and the test dates on the cards indicates it was built around 1995.
No recall and no automation, 8 stereo modules, VU meters, 82E341 transformer mic pre, 82E242 black eq
It had been in storage for at least 10 years and shows little signs of wear. I didn’t get the original SSL detailed spec manual with it but there is a very thorough binder of the MTV wiring details.
I have 2 very complete 8000GB service manuals which is a big help.
I can’t say I knew tons about the 8k though I looked after 6ks years ago. This console is the GB with 2 stereo mix busses not the 5.1 configuration. I have it up and running and I’m working through testing everything. So far so good. I’m trying to wrap my head around the GB configuration. I’ve discovered the PFL switch at the bottom of the fader. That’s gotta go. There is also the “Push To Talk” on the Bus Trim pot. I’ll want to revert that back to “Solo Isolate”. I see were Brewery posted a link on doing that back in 2017 but his link is dead.
If any 8000GB owners out there would like to suggest what other broadcast features need to get removed, I’d love to hear from you. I’ve yet to find an actual operators manual for the 8000GB. It seems like some of the buttons are possibly just named differently for Broadcast minds. Like Check Tape – is this the same as Ready Tape? Is the “Clean Feed” they refer to just “Direct Out”?
Here are some status switches I could use some clarification on.
On the channel strip
Bus AFL
Check Tape
Monitor Tape Send
On the 651
Bounce
Routing To Input
Record
Remix
Broadcast
Thanks for any help,
Richard
