The white label with the console information was normally fitted by SSL to the patch end as a default.
This may not be the case with the consoles but, SSL cheated a bit with serial numbers, probably like most manufacturers. Instead of having 0001 as a serial number, they used 1001 as this implied that many units were produced so clients didn't feel that they had an early piece of equipment, probably untested in the field and subject to design changes.
Years ago, you could call SSL, quote the serial number and obtain a manual for about £25. I don't think they do that these days but would like to be proved wrong!
