Dynamic not working on console >>>SOLVED<<<
« on: January 03, 2019, 01:53:07 PM »
Hi all,

We are refurbishing our new/old console. We have a very strange issue with dynamics. We have loaded the first 2 buckets (16 channels), as we are still recapping the rest of the channels (it is a 4040E console).

The thing is that when dynamic is on, the signal is cut, nothing sounds in the channel. This happens in all the channels (16 channels). But... this is the strange thing, when we connect any of this channel into any position using the extender, the dynamic works fine.

So all the channels are ok if used with the extender, but dynamic is not working in any of them, if they are placed into the bucket.

The computer is not connected and jumpers are fitted in the bottom part of the console.

We will keep doing more tests.

Any help... will be welcome.

Regards.

Oihan

Is the gate on? no control volts to gate?

Hi,

Thanks for answering. We are still recapping channels for loading into the third bucket for checking if the same thing happens there. The problem it is not only with the gate, is also with the compressor. When any channel is plugged with the extender, the dynamic section of any channel is working fine. When the same channels are interted in the bucket without extender... when dynamic switch is pushed... the signal is cut (even whe is activated for monitor).

Next days we will check the third bucket and will see what happens.

I will write back soon.

Regards.

Hi,

We have tried the third bucket loaded with recapped channels. The dynamics of 8 channels af this bucket work fine.

We will check all ribbon cables between buckets.

Hi all,

I am stuck with this issue. I have checked all ribbon cables between buckets and they are plugged corectly. And they look that are working fine.

In any channel inserted on any position of the first 2 buckets (1 to 16) without an extender, cuts signal when dynamic is activated. If it is inserted with the extender... it works (dynamic works and signal is not cut). Buckets located on right side of master section (channels 17 to 40) are working fine (there is no issue when dynamic is activated in the channels). All channel have been tested one by one (no issues with dynamics) and all the console have been recapped by us, the last months.

I do not undestand why dynamics is working with the extender and it is not working without the extender (in the same position of any from 1 to 16).

Could someone please give me an opinion about this? I do not know what I am missing.

Thanks to all in advance.

Regards.

What are the dynamic meters (leds) doing? Are the showing maximum gain
reduction?

The leds do not do nothing. Without the extender... when pushing "CH IN" for activating the dynamics, the signal is cut and no leds working, no gate-expander or comp working. Same channel, same slot with extender... everything fine (as I have explained it happens on the first two buckets, from 1 to 16 slots)

Same happens pushing "MON" when dynamic is wanted to apply on incoming group signal.

Is there any difference between extender and channel mother board edge connectors? Maybe with the extender less connectors are used or so...

Thanks for the interest

I know this is not the answer you are looking for but I had(still have) the same problem on a few channels. I pulled the channel and pulled the dynamics card, cleaned the edge connector and re-seated the dynamics card and that fixed the issue. However in your case, to have two whole buckets not working is strange.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for sharing your experience.

My case is very strange. Each channel, from 1 to 16 is working fine except dynamics (activation of dynamic, the channel audio signal is gone). But if you pull any channel, plug the extender and connect the channel (in his slot) to the extender... dynamic works fine.

I hope someone who knows about edge connector differences between channel and extender... Would be able to give me an idea of what could be the issue.

Thanks one more time.

Yes the difference in the ch extender is definitely a good clue, thats why I asked about the
meters.
As far as cleaning the edge card I bet just "re-booting" the bucket might fix it
as well, what can happen with the dynamics card, the regulators can "lock
up" on power up (via bucket, not soft start from Atomic PSU)
causing them to not pass audio when engaged, unless it has the
diode mod.
I'm going to look into the ch extender clue.

"unless it has the diode mod."

Would it be possible to the schematic or instructions for that diode mod?

Thanks,

I'm not sure I have the docs, if I recall it is a diode strapped across
the regulators on the dynamics card, perhaps a real SSL tech could
correct me if I'm not remembering it correctly.

Hi,

Here is the info about "dynamics diode mod":

Hi all,

We have received and installed a new PSU today, an Atomic Instrument SBD unit.

Dynamic is working in all channels now. So the problem was the "regulators lock up" issue.

Thanks to all for helping.

Thanks Norman, for buiding those PSUs.

Regards.
