4000E/G - No audio from master fader - SOLVED

This is strange(or not). I can route signal from any channel to LF/RF and get audio to the monitor section including volume control but the master fader has no control at all. Also, there is no indication on the L/R m meters. Any ideas?

Hm... My first thought is that this would be a problem on the e27 card, 'cause a failure there would impact all 4 master channels. A good place to start would be to check whether the Audio VCA or Sidechain VCA output is low, that would narrow down half the board.

When you say you've routed signal from a channel to LR/RF, do you mean that signal is passing through the master section without showing up on meters/touching the master fader, or that you've patched around to the monitor section?

The E27 card makes sense as it appears the master fader appears to feed the E27 which contains the compressor. However, the compressor works fine and the master fader does nothing at all. To answer you earlier question, when I apply signal to ch 24 through the patch bay line input (as if in mix mode) I can see signal in the channel. The large fader works, however, assigning ch 24 to LF/RF makes no difference as I still get audio to the monitors but not through the master fader. If I go to "Reply" mode, the console acts more normal in that the LF/RF have to be assigned in order to get audio to the monitors and meter. However the master fader still has no effect on the audio level.

Easy way, is to over patch from Pre-VCA insert output into Post-VCA Insert Return, the effectively patches over the VCA (master fader and compressor), if audio returns you have an issue with the 27 card.

Could it be as simple as a missing computer link to the master fader? Since you say the compressor works fine, and there's really not much master fader specific electronics on the 27 card.

I dont see how you can hear audio on the stereo bus without the meters moving. Are you sure you are monitoring the stereo bus?
Simple test. Switch the oscillator on and send it to the stereo bus. Buttons at top of main module.
Do the meters move? Are you hearing the tone?
Move the master fader and tone should go up and down.

Maybe I have not been as clear as I should. I am in Mix mode, Desk Out, Stereo Mode. I can send audio into any channel, assign to LF/RF, bring up a fader and I get audio and main meter deflection. However, the Master Fader in the 651 does not work. It does not affect the signal to the monitor section. Hmmm.

Well, now that we have a clear description, it narrows it down. So do you have extenders? Pull the module up, scope around the fader. Missing ground on the fader? Faulty fader?

I would look at the computer send and return from master fader.

Unfortunately, I still have the issue. I have been so busy that I still have not connected the computer which I think is the culprit. I wish I could use the master fader because when mixing the console hot, there is no way to reduce level to the A to D's.

Use level control on buss compressor. Is the VCA offset engaged?
