Hi Mike
These functions were normally wired to the centre section DL's, 31, 32 or 33 (even 34 on larger consoles) but SSL changed their positions throughout the years so there would not be a set place for them.
I would suggest unscrewing and dropping these DL's down and making a note of the white cable idents on the wires. They would normally refer to the patchbay (A to W unless you have a larger patch!) but others could be Z01 etc. The centre section wires going to and from the patchbay from the DL's would be L, M, N, P and probably some of R and S.
Therefore, if a DL wire was labelled N32, just refer to the patchbay to see what the function is.
Some of the centre section wires came directly from the 651 centre section via the two 104 way MRAC connectors and did not go to the patchbay. These are probably labelled X or Z___?. Alt LS switching (should be Z02) and red light (should be Z01) are classic cases of this.
By the way, to get the word phrasing correct, the Control Room 651 mic provides talkback
to the studio live area via the pre fader cue feeds and the two listen mics (on the patch) are return talkback
back to the CR. The listen mics are different to normal mic sources on row A as, I think the listen mics are muted during a recording session to prevent feedback from the live recording area whereas normal mic sources (A1-48 etc) are always active or live during a recording. Musicians can be heard in the listen mics at any time in the CR but, are muted whilst recording.
I may be wrong with this but, hopefully, I'm right. This was the original SSL idea but you people know more than me in reality. I don't have a console but most of you do so, please correct me if I am wrong!
The red Light switching is activated automatically when the console is in record mode so, a red light can be wired via a suitable remote relay box position and be lit up near any live rooms to warn people not to enter.
The alt speaker switching, like the red light contacts, both from the 651, and having 2 x DL pin positions, activates a remote relay (supplied by the client on older consoles) to switch between two or more sets of alternative speakers. There have been recent posts on this including a wiring diagram from Mattia Sartori, the person who started this website forum
(please give him some more positive Karma points as he deserves them)!
Hope this helps a bit and regards from
