Lamp voltage and their position.
« on: January 13, 2021, 05:44:06 PM »
Hi all!

Been a while. Mixing mixing mixing.

Mixing with this bad boy is awesome :) now I’m at the fussy stuff.

Having a few bulbs not work, slowly been changing them over to led.
I have a few boxes of the original bulbs left.

Wondering, is there a ‘map’ of where the bulbs are 36v and where they are 24v?

Any help would be great!

I'm not aware of any 24 volt bulbs in an SSL 4000. Where did you find them?

Well. Prior to knowing there are 24v lamps, I pulled and replaced bulbs all over with my 36v stock.
So, I don’t know where the 24v came out of but I noticed the “dead” bulbs that I’ve kept are mixed 24v and 36v.
Then I checked my stock pile that came with the console and there are boxes of 36v and 24v lamps.

I spoke to my local tech and he confirmed there are 24v positions, but wasn’t solid on where exactly.
He was gonna check his notes but hasn’t gotten back to me yet.

So. I dunno!

Yeah, go figure. These are in the usual places (Solo, Cut, Ready Group, Ready Tape, and 651) ?

Possibly the 24v lamps are in the tape remotes, as they are driven off the tape machine(s), not the SSL +/-18v rails.

I’ve been pulling from the cut. Solo. And the 651 section.
So now I’m lost in bulb world.

Tape remote lamp details

As far as I remember, SSL fitted 36v/20 Milli amp T5.5 bulbs in ALL their Highland switch bulbs to begin with in the late 1970’s apart from the 681 keyboard panel which was fitted with 24 volt bulbs (defaulting to Studer tape machines which were the norm then).

More on that later as SSL adjusted the DL41 and 42 track remote wiring to make the lamps light up ONLY when the tape machine went into record, rather than when the record button was actually pressed (it then needed a tally back from the tape machine to CONFIRM the tape machine was actually going into record rather than just the lamp lighting up on the console regardless).

The smaller 682 (rather than the 681) tape remote panel could have had several tape remotes on it (82E17 cards to switches) and the lamps depended on the tape machines involved when SSL got the original spec from the client.

From memory, the 681 and 682 panels had different lamps fitted as follows when SSL knew what the tape machines actually were. I remember changing various bulbs on these two panels many times to suit the tape machines used.

Studer tape machines had 24 volt lamps
Otari had 5v or 12v lamps (I can't remember)?
Some others had 12v lamps?

As someone else mentioned, the lamps on the 681 and 682 panels were powered by the tape machines via the S28E and S29E cables.

Hope this helps and clarifies things a bit. I worked at SSL from 1980 until 1987.

This is correct. From what I’ve been told recently!

Luckily I have a studer so the 24v bulbs can have a home.
The otari I have for stereo mixdown I have no clue.
But it’s not connected to transport anyway.

I appreciate that info Jim!
