Errrr....  Myke, not sure I understand what you said. I was going to scan the 688V section of the manual I got when I was on the 6k service course to a PDF and then upload it to the board.....

My bad dude. Here is a link to the block diagram of the 651e and 651v. My scanner sucks , maybe you can heads or tails of it.

Link to 688V schematics now posted to Tech Docs.

Sorry Artur, I can't help with G+ schemos, as my training was done back in 1988!

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for the Techs Docs. I'm very appreciated!

I am prepping a new Wiki for the community that will include a vast tech reference for the SSL Consoles, to ease up maintenance, mods or any other R&D projects. This is initiative is primarily associated with the SSLMixed project but the tech reference I plan to put there is to aid anyone with their consoles.

For this reason, I am constantly searching and gathering documentation that will, if possible (copyright issues), feature in this Wiki. So everything you might have to share I'd be appreciated, even if it's via private link. I'll be announcing this Wiki soon, I am currently structuring things.

Thank you so much!

Cheers,

Artur

My experience with two 6K's is that the A bus goes to both places, 651 and 688.  The S5E is connected to a Y.  The output of the 688 section then feeds the PRE VCA insert return of the 26 card.

The 26 cards are modified by removing the mix amp input caps and a trace cut or two thus removing the direct connection to the A buses.  The 688 does all it's stuff and the stereo outputs feed the 26 card PRE VCA insert returns.  The front end of the 26 card is not used.

So to do the mod you would need to take the 26 cards back to original, disconnect the S5E Y cable and go direct into the 651, and then make some MRAC changes.  I am not sure if the PRE VCA insert send is factory wired on a 6K or not.  It might already be tucked in the loom up to the patchbay.  Either way you would need to get the PRE VCA send and return to the patchbay.

That would create a hybrid with the A bus going straight to the 651 and have use of the B/C buses patching them back into channels to the A bus, rev returns, or as the imagination takes you.

Awesome! This is what I needed to hear, I heard the same thing from another tech
that has worked on these. The problem I am seeing on this one, is it seems to be
a mix of 4K and 6K The mixamp is fully populated, They look like regular G+
cards from a 4K, another problem it is a custom patch bay`With no pre or
post inserts and of course there is no documents for any of it.

Needless to say it sounds like this owner never had it functioning properly
since he got it and lots of people have worked on it. The B buss kind of
works but has 10% distortion! So I am going to keep plugging at it!

I will update the forum when I get it working! Thanks! N

michaeldtech, You were absolutely right! but since these mix amps were already populated
I just made a quick SE5 ribbon and fed the mix amps with the A buss, but you are also correct
the mrac is missing the pins on the cable side (vca patch) so I just jumpered the 651 backplane to
get some juice flowing to make sure I was on the right track.

Do you have any idea if the mrac uses the same pins as the psu bicc? Also I'm not getting
anything to the monitors, but they were  not right with the 688 powered up.
I hate the damn monitor matrix shit. Brings back nightmares from Paisley Park!
It looks like I will be back or staying longer......

MRAC and Bicc crimps
« Reply #24 on: April 05, 2014, 11:46:04 AM »
The MRAC crimps used on the 104 way M1 and M2 connectors for the 651 are NOT the same as those used on the round (PSU, small TV and computer) and all of the 6 to 24 way rectangular Bicc connectors used by SSL.

I have a bag of MRAC pins here as used in the flying looms for the 651, and the round or rectangular Bicc connector crimps are made by companies such as ITT (Trident?). I also have many of these, either socket or pins.

I think your POST VCA insert is the "PROGRAMME" insert on the 6K.  As for the monitoring, that is the same for 4 and 6K where the internal monitor feeds from the 25 distribution card.  Do externals monitor?  If the cards have not been re-capped I would first check all 1 ohm resistors for open resistance and re-cap all electro's on the 25, 26, 24, 22 cards to start.  That is the triple heater meridian for amplifying and monitoring the mix bus.  Work out from there.

The problem with the monitor was the program to monitor button was not marked
or working properly in the 688 section, So I will jump out the logic so it stays in
that mode like a 4K. We are then gonna rip out all the 6K stuff and put some cool
summing amps on the B and C busses for some variety. Cheers. N

Hi. I just joined the forum. I have a 6056 e with g upgrade. I will try to look into this mod as I have time between mixes. Seems to be a bit of time between uploading a mix version and getting comments from the client on this project. I am currently feeding the A buss insert to my Drip Electronics Fairchild 670 then into my protools 192 IF.  I like the gain trim pot on then 688 buss as it makes adjusting the feed to the 670 really useful and easy. But having the A buss dedicated in "4000" mode would be a good thing.  Please let me know what info anyone needs as I have complete manuals and could do scans time permitting.

What I did with this 6K is make the A buss a straight 4K then put API mix amps on B.
We have not figured out what we are doing with C but its very cool so far!

How did you do the A buss to 651 mod? Straight bypass of the 688's 256 card with jumpers?  I have thought about doing a 2520 mod too.

I have to look at it but isn't the C buss different than then A and B buss circuits? If that is so , I probably will have the C buss bypassed and  go direct to the 651. In my quick look at the manual today, I see that the input  caps on the summing input of the 256 cards are bigger (2 x 2200 uf) than on the 26 card (2 x 470 uf). Also the 256 card has the hybrid differential insert driver hybrid chip vs a 5534 single ended insert driver. It has been mentioned that the 688 summing amps do not have the mojo of the 26 cards on the 651. Anyone want to elaborate on that?
