Switching E line amp to G in 4000E

Dont wanna blow something up so...

...does anyone know if I need to resolder anything etc or is it possible to just put a G line amp in a 611 E channel?

The line amp will probably be ok, just compare pinouts.

The Mic pre side of things has extra wires, from the gain switch to the molex connectors on the G series amp card.

I tried put i in but it was a no go, only signal on one side, clipping noise in the other and Line trim didnt work

Yeah.. looking at a channel here, the line trim is also on a molex to the amp card, rather than via the edge connector.

Doen anyway has info about this mod to make G-line amps work in E,  rumours says CLA dud this, so probably Bruce Doctor did this on CLA´s

Wouldn't that kill half of the "E" mojo?  What's left on an E series that makes CLA so devoted to that specific desk?  From my understanding, almost everyone agrees with the center section upgrades to an E Series, then you have your eq battles, then VCA vs. Moving Faders (CLA swears by VCA's, thus the VCA Auto climbing back up in price), then what's left of an original E Series?

Hey  From all my test, I like the older E line amps much better than the G line amps. I owned a G console for 25 years..recently converted to all E, including Gold Can center section VCA's  so I know them well . But the G mic amps are much better than the E mic amps...

this is all about "goo and glue".

This is an artistic choice, not a technical one, the older VCA's have a texture that is hard to duplicate. Its an aesthetic. Is it "better"? Not technically, but you may find it useful in your bag o' trix.

We did some comparisons of newer 2181 built VCAs in a Quad Eight Ventua that came stock with the discrete black can 202 on the faders. Stayed with the old ones even though clearly the newer ones were cleaner (lower distortion) and quieter. Nothing wrong with them, just not the same "vibe" as the older VCA.

If it had been a techno studio/producer we probably would have chosen the 2181 based VCA.

I was saying that most people like the older E channels, but it's popular to upgrade the Center Section cards.  CLA may be most responsible for this configuration, but I'm pretty sure there are many great engineers out there that have discovered this configuration before him.  Remember when you couldn't give away a desk with VCA Auto?  Now, people are yanking out their moving faders in exchange for VCA's!  Wild.  It is true,  what is technically inferior is what most of us enjoy hearing. 
I'm not sure if I could tell the difference between an E Center Section or the G+.  I just know that's what everyone seems to be doing right now.  Agree completely on the line amps and the mic amps.  But how often do you use the SSL Mic amps for tracking?

I don't use the mic pres much since I have a rack of 1073's .. But the G mic pre's do sound great on toms.. I have the complete G+ upgrade center section cards for sale if you know anyone looking for the total set. This set includes 2 26 mix amps, 1 limiter card and 1 final output card.. + the G+ master fader also.. (higher impedence)..

I owned  ultimation on my G series for 20 years.. The VCA mode  actually  had faster resolve and was quieter.. The buffer for the ultimation was not done well, therefore it sounded kind of glarey.. I since converted to all VCA faders , and never been happier.. The console has a much better tone..

this is so true.. we are in a arts business, were art is the final decision.. I recently been using the 202c and really loving them over the 202xt's .. better sounding mix window!

wasnt the 202x the original dbx in center section, not the Gold can typ, ppl actually like the gold can (202c) better in center section

Hey Neumann.... When you swap out your center section cards,  is there a lot of tech work involved to make your G Center Section work in your E console?  Or,  is it just a matter of pulling out the E cards and dropping in the G's?
Also,  does this mean you prefer the E center section?  If so,  why?
